Preflower

I read in Eds book that its better to preflower before setting to 12/12 as it doesnt shock the plants and cause hermies. What does this mean? How long does it take to preflower naturally?

Dont know if what you are calling preflower is the same as what I have read but mine go into darkness for 36 hours before 12/12 to help reset the plants growing clock. This was info I picked up from a different site and has worked quite well for me.

I have never had a hermie problem because of putting plants into 12/12. However changing the light to 12/12 gradually over a period of a week will prevent any potential shock. Plants generally take about 6 weeks or so to show pre-flowers - that's when the plant is mature enough to begin flowering.

It depends what light cycle your on if it's 18/6 then it should be easier for them to adjust to to 12/12.
Me personally it was 18/6 to 12/12 and before the flip i already had pre-flowers kept them in the dark for 24 hours then off i popped.

shocking the plants with 36 hours darkness will knock off a week of flowering time with no change in sex, or stress. call it "good stress":)

Could this pre-flowering mean bringing a plant to maturity before flowering. If growing from seed it takes a plant so long to reach maturity. When a plant finally reaches maturity it will preflower and show it's sex.

Prolly what he meant. I let some plants veg for 3.5 months once and as soon as i cut light back within 3 days i had pollen shooting out. I had left town and didnt think this would happen. 1st grow. Standaman how long did u veg?

Some say this some say that. I tried a new route from seed on a single plant just for shits and giggles starting from 12/12. Guess what? It went right into flowering in under three weeks and was added to the scrog. A little smaller mind you, but still works out the same.

Might be something to try at a later date with a number of White Russian seeds I have kicking around.
