3 foot tall plants in 3 gallon pots, transplant before flower?

Hi all,

I'm about to move some 3 foot tall Brainwreck babies from ~400watts of CFL to their final destination under a 600w hps. They are currently in 3 gallon pots. I might veg them for another week, maybe not, but should I transplant up to a larger container before flowering? I believe i've heard that coco doesn't need as much space.

Thanks!

i would.... i give about 12" per gallon of medium.... id x plant into 5 gallon pots, veg for a few more days to reduce xplant shock. then flower....:joint:

Perfect! I was kinda leaning towards that. I am comparing these 2 coco plants with 2 in organic soil, and I definitely want to transplant them up to 5 gallons.

How long should I let them breathe in their new pots? Two weeks or so, or longer?

I'd pot up and flower with no wait, but you could probably get away with a bit more veg if your determined. Only thing is, your 600w may have some trouble penetrating to the lower parts of 3' tall plants. I'd suggest some bending or spreading of the branches.

the extra veg time isnt for added growth... it's more for reducing xplant shock before sending em into flower.... id say 5 days tops:2cents:

No need to transplant. 3 gallons is huge for COCO. I use 1 & 3 gallon pots, and the plants in 1 gallon pots are 95% as big as those in 3 gallons. Advantage of bigger pots is you don't have to water as frequently. I would not wait any longer to flower. They are already a bit big for a 600 watt lamp. After stretch, they will be very tall.

Hi there. I am currently flowering some plants in 3 gallon grow bags. I have transplanted twice since the start and the plants are also under a 600 hps and they have grown huge for my set up. I am sold on the 3 gallon size although for outdoors I use the 5 gallon pails and nursury pots. I also use a coco coir mixed with sunshine mix and worm castings. Cheers.

3 foot tall in veg, what height are you expecting these to reach?

are they topped? are you going to be training the branches down?

4-6 foot plants? or have you grown these before and they have next to no stretch?

I would keep em in the 3 gallons just because that is decent enough room for any indoor to grow in especially under a 600 watter.

Haha, this is my second grow. I actually just finished my first harvest yesterday (the last two plants took an extra week).

My first run was 5 plants about 1-2 feet tall. I harvested around 5 oz.

This one is 4 plants, 2 in coco and 2 organic. The organic ones are about 4 inches shorter but I am tying down the coco to the same height.

You guys are right about them getting big. I put them in my gl120 and it pretty much fills up a 3x3 canopy easily.

I have topped them a few times and have been training them to try to get a semi even canopy

I should flip the trigger pretty soon then.

Is there anything I should know about having plants double the size I grew last time?

These are brainwreck babies btw

um...

um...

about the repotting issue; are there roots popping out of the bottom of the pots? how long has it been since you transplanted to 3 gal pots? if its relatively recent, then i wouldnt bother repotting since the your plants roots almost certainly havent filled up the pot yet

you see, what i like to shoot for, is the plant needing repotting right before the flip. ill wait till roots are bursting, then pop the plant into a bigger pot with fresh coco. how much bigger depends on how much i want to water, space, vertical space, irrigation method, etc.

with regards to what you should do with bigger plants, well, heres something i do regardless, prune. are you pruning indoors? now is the best time, right before the flip. take some quality clones (or not) and learn to concentrate the plants energy. if you dont prune, and want to know a good method, let me know. peace :D

@chemsteady: these clones came in rockwool cubes, put them in 1 gallon smart pots until roots cam bursting out the bottom and sides (within 2 weeks) and now they have been 3 gallon pots for at least a month and a half. I think I picked this clones up in June, I'll have to check and verify.

There are roots coming out the bottom of the organic babies, not as much from the coco. The trucks are almost the size of a half dollar coin on the coco and between a dime and a nickel thick for the organics.

I can definitly use some pruning tips. Since I have been topping plants (first time) I am noticing fan leaves always get in the way.

I have cloned the very lower branches. All 5 cuts I took rooted too! I'll vedge them a bit and donate them to the club probably. I doubt they can last 6 to 8 weeks in my ghetto temporary veg setup

I'd say no but if you do, the extra veg time is to let the roots let fill in. Roots eventually stop growing into flower and a gallon of extra medium might be too much. I'd give it at least a week but that's just me...

Your light intensity and how often you want to feed is gonna play a part in whether or not you want to do that or not too...

you see,

you see,

we actually agree. i like to repot right before i flip, remember? thats around, oh i dont know, a week or so before the photo period change. roots get new coco, settle in, get flipped, fill up my pot, and grow big giant flowers.

real quick on pruning, since im not trying to hijack a thread, this is what i do:
-i top at sixth or seventh node
-remove bottom three branch pairs
-remove bottom three to four growth shoots on remaing branches.

this is often referred to as lolly-popping or pistlewhipping your plants (except pistlewhipped went even further by removing all the way up to the growth tips). im a huge LUCAS fan, and i still use his old posts as guidance when growing. i bascially use his version of pistlewhipping. you end up with dense, concentrated colas you can kill a vampire with. cool.
