Nice, BB. I haven't tried mushies since I was 19... I didn't get the sterility right and only 2/8 cakes made it. Never ended up fruiting, probably a humidity issue. I'd love to give it a 'grown-up try' though, and I've got a spare bedroom at the house right now. :D

Where do you like to get your spores?

Hovz - got them for $10 each cause i got so many

VT_Fire - one syringe does 8 jars for me, i use all 8 cakes for each tub then

79towncar - yes i always start from multispore
i like to support the companies
do have a bottle of Karo, but it is over a year old and i don't expect to use it anyhow

Bill O'Reilly - thanks for the link, no plans for the Liquid culture friend :ying: i plan to just do cakes then crumble into tubs

strainbrain - google mushroom spores  they are sold all over the net very legal like - i like sporeworks

thank you all for visiting the thread :friends:

moving along slowly now, just try and enjoy the show my friends
there are many many ways to grow cubies, i know we would all do it differently :rasta:
happy with my methods, and i just hope to inspire some new growers with these simple old teks
no offense to anyone, and i do appreciate the time taken to help...:respect:

i would like some tips on the pressure cooker though, i have never used one before :bongsmi:

Looking good Brother Bear, cant wait to see those shrooms grow, nice strain choice. Thirteen years of growing mush and you just got a pressure cooker now... its about time hehe. Peace.

For the cooker use the minimal amount of water needed.. Using more water only takes it longer to start boiling.. Make sure you elevate the jars off the bottom of the cooker.. If you leave them directly on the bottom the jars can crack.. Since you have so many jars I would use spare lids to get them off the bottom.. When you stack multuiple rows of jars use some tinfoil between each stacked layer.. Cook at 15 PSI for a full hour.. Some people go 90minutes but with BRF you can cook for an hour.. After your done let the cooker sit overnight before you try and open it.. If you depressurize it too fast you can crack jars.. Also always wait for the jars to cool before innoculation.. Hot jars and substrate can drastically reduce the amount of viable spores.. If I think of anything else I will let youu know. Or if you have a specific question let me know.. Goodluck!

We like slow, BB, gives us time to pack more bowls. Thanks for the lead... I know they're still legal in the states, but so are plumbers and I ask friends for referrals when I need one of those, too. :smoke:

cool beans Brother Bear! I have been thinkin about tappin some jars myself lately..:chin:

Just getting started into this myself. 2 weeks ago I knocked up 12 jars with brazil, 10 jars with cambodian, and gonna make a quart LC jar of each. Growing pot and shrooms is a great time.

WOW BB looks like your are ready to go.

My personal experience with the techniques you are about to perform were filled with lots of hard work and then much disappointment in the end. This could be due to my ineptness at the time as well. Overall the shrooms were low in potency, and there weren't that many of them. My friend took them and the wierdest thing that happened was he went to the store and thought the lady in front of him was a parallelogram. Maybe that is a little wierd but he said that was the height of it.

You will increase the payoff for all your effort EXPONENTIALLY if you switch to wild bird seed (WBS) and then spawn to a dung substrate. You already have a jumbo sized PC (I have the same one coincidentally....it's awesome) so working with large amounts of WBS is no prob for you.

If you get some plastic spawn bags and a small impulse sealer it will increase your efficiency by a lot.

WBS is much much more nutritious (POTENCY), and these dung substrates can hold tons of water (YIELD). Mushrooms are 90% H2O after all.

You could just make 1 quart of liquid culture. That could easily generate 300mL of beautiful mycelium-saturated nutrient solution in 1 week. That could make 30 10mL syringes of solution. Each syringe could innoculate 3 filter spawn bags. 3 bags hold about 10lbs of dry bird seed. You spawn to bulk substrate (dung) at a rate of 1:4. So say we take 30 lbs of horse manure for each 10lbs of dung to have nice ratio with big flushes. I'm kind of stoned so lets see if I get this right.

30 syringes x 3 bags/syringe x 3.33 lbs WBS/bag = 300 lbs of WBS

300 lbs WBS x 30 lbs dung/10 lbs WBS = 900 lbs of horse manure

You could fruit from all that just by making 1 little quart of LC.

PC tips:
Use the metal plate they gave you to not let the jars touch the bottom of the PC.

Cover jars with aluminum foil, and set into the PC as the water comes to a boil.

Once boiling put lid on and reduce heat to med-high while pressurizing.

Once at 15 psi, reduce heat as much as possible while still maintaining pressure.

ALLOW TO DEPRESSURIZE NATURALLY

Take out jars, remove foil, and wipe of excess water from top with paper towel.

Put a coffee filter over top and secure with rubberband, allow to cool for 12 hrs.

I like to PC the jars first and then put a glob of "High-temperature RTV silicone" on the injection hole. After allowing to cure for 24 hours you have a self-healing injection port. You can also use the expanding spongy ear plug you might be able to get at wally world as an injection port.

Last of all, I've seen the way you grow weed dude and it's beautiful, you know how to cultivate life.

Using different substrates does not affect potency, genetics affect potency.

The only thing you gain from bulk substrate is weight harvested.

The only way to consistently get more potent mushrooms is to isolate.

With brf you dont need a pressure cooker.

Anxious to see some pics brother, looks like youve got more than enuf to keep yourself happy.

what do you estimate dry yield per syringe? in a perfect world

That's absolutely 1000% impossible to determine. It entirely depends on how much substrate/medium you're using. If you innoculate 10000 lbs of medium....or 1 small mason jar.....eventually given ideal conditions...the mycelium will grown and consume it all. It has no upward growth limitation. If it had a medium the size of the Earth, it would eventually consume it...LOL.

However, let's just say you can do quite a few jars with a syringe as BB eluded to...I think 8 jars....
You can take and roll that media into much larger batches of media, infinitely...and then get the mushies to fruit whenever it reaches a critical mass of mycelia.

Honestly: 1 syringe is all you ever need if you can keep an innoculated culture around. But that's a gross oversimplification.....

Access You make a good point about keeping a culture going.. But one thing to remember is that you should fruit your isolates every year and then take more cultures from that.. You can't really just keep mycellium multiplying over and over and over.. If this were the case growers would just use some of there bulk substrate to innoculate more bulk substrate and so on and so on.. It doesn't work that way.. Mycellium after about 2 grain to grain transfers should be frited.. That's the reason why commercial mushroom farmers always start from spawn.. They mix there spawn to a bulk substrate (compost) and then they fruit..

No way man. Poo/compost shrooms (on average) are much more potent than brf cake shrooms. I've done both myself, and substrate means a lot.
