Hey everyone i'm going to be heading to amsterdam the begininng of next month. this is the hotel i will be staying at what do you guys think? http://www.nh-hotels.com/nh/en/hotels/the-netherlands/amsterdam/nh-amsterdam-centre.html.. I have never been to the Netherlands before and open to any suggestions. Am i staying in a good area? Anything special that you guys suggest. We dont have crazy amount of money but we have enough, still on a budget though. Good bud in Amsterdam at this time?

Thanks,

James

sorry realized in wrong section..

To start the stampede, right across the canal (see hotel site map) is the Leidseplein, where lots is happening, lots of coffee shops, plus you can catch a tram there to anywhere. In that general direction is Dam Square, ground zero to some. (Get a map while at home.)
But first,to your left, you can walk down Overtoom to the Kashmir (google it).
Out your Hotel door, rightish, is the Noon. To your right, walking distance from hotel,is the Van Gogh and Rijk museums. Also, down P.C. Hoofstraat, is the Van Gogh Cafe (on the corner).Excellent breakfast.
If you're American, like me,your goona' take a hit on the Euro conversion. ATM's seem to have the best rates, AND call your bank before you leave and let them know you are going...VIP, or could get a card denial. Also, keypads don't have letters, so know your password in numbers.
That is a very nice hotel. Out of my range.
Edit: Uh, try the hash :)

145 euros a night? budget? Why dont you change your accommodation and stay in a hostel. Then you will have much more money to enjoy yourself. I recommend the "Heart Of Amsterdam" cheep and cheerful man. Its getting more and more expensive out there, and youre going to be way too stoned to even appreciate those beds man.

If I was you I would find a hotel on Haarlemmerstraat (name of street)

and cancel that place you have...without a doubt

trust me, this is the place to chill, you have Greenhouse, Daampkring (PF)
and many other coffeeshops

and it is easy to go anywhere from here, the Central Station is close, and
I would recommend going to Haarlem for sure. It is ten minutes by train
from the Central Station

some good advice here!

id get a bit of a cheaper hotel than that though or look at an apartment, otherwise its not really a bad area, bit of a trek to RLD etc.

Haarlemmerstraat (street) is an excellent place to use as the base camp.

Every time I was in Amsterdam, somehow I always ended up going there
in the morning, and always had to take trams from the Vondel Park area.

And in the evening it was also the same, coming from the Greenhouse
United coffeeshop, blasted from a toking session, taking that tram by the
Central station and riding in it while that high was not the biggest pleasure
in my life...

...I would rather wake up and walk two minutes to the coffeeshop, do the
wake and bake session, and from there go walking wherever I have planned
the day before or after toking on some medecine in the United or in the
Daampkring (ex-Pink Floyd) coffeeshop.

...and same in the evening after the last smoking session it would have been
nice just to walk to the hotel two minutes, and not have to take trams or
anything else.

...this years cup, Captain Crip had a hotel on Haarlemstraat, and he said it
was the best choice he has made in a long time. In the morning he would
walk to the GH United, do his wake and bake, and from there ride his bike
wherever he wanted.

...this is where I understood my mistake, and in the future would only get
a hotel next to the coffeeshop where I plan to chill most of the time

Of course there were many coffeeshops by the Vondel Park hotels where
I always stayed, but they were nothing to write home about...obviously

In the end, the best place to choose is near a coffeeshop that you like to
chill at, and use as your base camp. For me this is Greenhouse United and
also Daampkring (Pink Floyds)

...I also like Amnesia, but there is not many hotels in that area, and The
Greenplace I only like for the bud, hanging out in that place is not something
that I enjoyed.

Without a doubt the most pleasurable time I had in the Netherlands has been
chilling in the Haarlem coffeeshops. All three Willie Wortels coffeeshops are
just awesome, The Sativa, The Indica, and The Sensimilla cs are just so
layed back, and the way you are treated is completely different that in
Amsterdam coffeeshops.

There in Haarlem, you feel like you are one of the locals, and there is no
pressure of any kind. At least this is how it was for me.

Plus Haarlem is such a beautiful city, it is like a miniature Amsterdam, where
all of a sudden al of the tourists disappeared, and only the locals are left.

...This is where I dream of living when I move to the Netherlands this autumn,
and even if I can't live there right away, this will always be my main
objective, because I simply love Haarlem.

thanks for the info, we booked it flight plus hotel so it comes out to about 80 euros a night so its almost half of the original price, plus im going with my girlfriend so i dont want to stay in a hostel. we are near the trams and stuff so i think we should be ok getting around.

80 Euros a night? F**k, that's good.
Just remember, the last trams leave at midnight from Centraal Station to their final destination., so be sure to catch one. Or, you can take an expensive taxi, but tell them you are going to Leidseplein ("lied-se-pline") and not your hotel, because they might run you around for more money if they know the nice place you are staying. Then walk across the bridge.
Go to Haarlem, big open market on main square on Friday and Saturday..
Google "Hemp City", and on the site is a walking video of how to get to Willie Wortal's three shops...the first on is to the 'right' when you walk out of the train station. The video might be confusing on that point. Oh, yeah, exit the train station to the "South".

NH hotels SUCK,and the staff are NAZIs.
Years back,I stayed in several NH,"4-star","luxury" shitholes in Amsterdam, and they're all fucking garbage.
They're an "E.U. four star" that BARELY ekes out two stars,by any FAIR,human standards.
Nice lobby,toilet-grade rooms,asshole staff,and their prices SUCK.
Oh,and as soon as the staff smells weed, you'll have a managers' ultra-stern warning,if you're lucky....If it's late at night, expect a fire marshal and/or cops at your door, and they'll fine you several hundred Euros, then the NH will evict you, just for smoking dope,in Amsterdam.
Nice,huh?
NH does NOT want canna-tourists,they're a "business-class" shithole,period.
If you're perceived as "pot tourists" they categorize you as being akin to junkies, and all staff cooperation goes shit-out-the-door.
Try www.stayamsterdam.com for apartments, and stay the fuck away from anything that says "NH"....
Enjoy your trip, any Q's,please feel free to ask!

Cheers!

Safe journeys
Im with REZDOG on the NH sleeping arrangements they are monkey bastard hands!!!

Has anybody actually stay at this hotel? if so, how was it?

do not worry that much about what REZ wrote, just take into account what
he said can happen if you are not in a cannabis smoker friendly hotel, and you
get caught smoking weed.

if you do not smoke herb in the room, everything will be just fine.

just smoke everywhere else except your hotel room

...and make sure you hit Haarlem and take a ride on the boats in Amsterdaam
and see the canal system and everything else while toked up on some good
weed. And definitely take your girlfriend to The Hague, that is also such
and awesome place with a great beach and a lot of places to check out

Canal Bus has day passes. You can get off at different spots, three lines,
Info at bottom of web page.
I've done it. fun, diferent view, worth it IMO.
But it is Euro 20 each. (see how one can start spending?)
http://www.canal.nl/en/index.php

...if you like art, consider Van Gogh seriously. After 4pm. Near your hotel.

thanks for the canal info i was wondering about that. I know you cant walk around amsterdam smoking weed on the streets but are there certain areas you can get away with besides a coffeeshop? on the canal trip? need some tips since there is a chance we will not get a smoking room. Hotel says non-smoking facilities but they have smoking rooms?

Thanks,

James

Smoking rooms in nice hotels do not include cannabis,as mentioned.
No smoking on canal bus.
If you and your lady discreetly sit on a bench next to a canal (always show respect), and to profile, don't wear baggy pants with your hat on backward, don't play the ugly American ....from one American to another...outdoor smoking is possible.. did I mention show respect... don't do it in Red Light District unless you want everybody you don't want around you, around you...
If you can find a space cake, eat half, wait 90 minutes and see if it hits, then maybe other half...did canal bus on this.. museum, walk around...
EDIT: I do not endorse outdoor smoking, cop will approach you so don't have more than 5 grams on you. However, I have done at the park surrounding Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum.

thanks prepress me and the lady always dress nice. what you said is what i expected. have u had to deal with cops in amsterdam? details please.

Other posters here have better stories.
A friend of mine took a piss in a narrow alley, spotted by the cops, took to local precinct, payed 50 Euro fine I think.
They've always been nice to me, but I've been there for football/soccor matches when the riot cops come out, and they are more business-like...I just love tall, blond Dutch lady-cops on horseback, or walking around...
