PC users with heat problems... Might have found a fix.

As a recent PC convert I've been having battles with getting the heat under control.

I think I found the solution on newegg last night.

I bought 6 of these:

These are pushing 80CFM, and have the wire fan blade cover. Which will make it easier to put the light blocking foam on.

They also make them in 92MM or 96MM, pushes a little more CFM for the same price.

But this is the bread and butter.

Scythe Co. knows the problem: you've got lots of fans, lots of noise, and you still don't know if the fans are actually cooling things off enough. In fact, you don't even know if all of your fans are actually turning.

Here's their solution: a panel that checks the temperature in up to four locations and the speed of up to four fans (may require three-pin connectors on fans) every two seconds. You manually fine tune the speed of each fan for the best compromise between temperature and noise, and an audio alarm lets you know if there is a fan or a temperature failure. Mounted on a sturdy aluminum frame that fits in an unused 5.25 inch bay, it is available in black (KM02-BK) or silver (KM02-SL).

Total is $122 if you use the UPS 3 day shipping.

Best of luck to those battling heat, I'm hoping everything comes in on Monday, and I'll report back.

Right now I'm using 4 80MM fans each capable of pushing 30CFM, but by the time I've added the light blocking foam, I'm sure it doesn't get anywhere near 30CFM.

I'm thinking this setup will take the temps from +8 ambient, to room temp.

Looks good but are you sure you don't need a motherboard to operate the controller?

ummmm So you said PC Users correct??? What size PC case are you using to be able to get all these fans inside??? I mean with 4 fans and lights etc.. etc it is already VERY crowded inside the Avg PC grow case... How you going to have room for all this???

I think I've got the same one as you. When these new ones come in, I'll just rip out the stock ones.

But I plan on putting 2 of these side by side exhausting the heat from the CFL's at the top in the back where the power supply would have gone.

I'm going to put 2 stacked on top of each other, or 2 chained together for the intake. Which ever works best. I'm thinking bottom front, since I removed the cover from blocking the intake.

The other 2 will be spares in case one goes out, or supplements.

Brilliant thinking, would love to see some pics if possible...

I think all these PC grows are the best example of guerrilla urban growing you can (not) find.

Oh yea.. It's you... LOL Sorry... :yoinks:

Yes I have subscribed to this one so keep us updated...

My lights on heat is still Avg around 3 to 4 degress higher then my room Temp and I have made no modifications.. Room Temp like 79 to 83... So case Temp around 81 to 87(This is running my lights at night) with the Avg lights on Temps being about 82 to 83... So not sure why your setup was having heat issues(Unless your Room temps are higher then mine.).. Or are you like trying to get the Temps down to like low 70's? So far my LR#2 seem to be having no heat issues at 83...

I think once cooler weather gets to my area, when my room temps are in the low 70's to upper 60's, this case will be perfect as is.. But those fans look interesting and at that price, I might just order 4 as backups..

Thanks!

The only thing I'll caution with them, without the fan controller they could be extremely / annoyingly loud. When I get it all setup I'll take my DB meter and see what kind of hum she's putting off :)

Right now the room temp is around 77 degrees with 50% humidity. After an 18 hour heat soak the temps are around 85 with the modified setup. Without the modified setup they hovered around 93.

But you are correct, I'm going for maximum cooling, so that if I get a strain that can turn purple with a little cooling I wanna have the option to try and bring it out.

ok, so everything finally came in and I got it installed.

the fan controller lasted about 8 minutes, and it bit the dust. what a POS.

the fans are amazing, but with 4 of them going full strength you couldn't hear yourself think. it was putting off over 98DBs when the meter was placed next to the PC.

so everything was stripped back out, and shipped back.

back to the drawing board.
