Planted new Dutch passion Fem seeds 6 days ago.

Germinated 6 in moist paper towel and they all cracked and then I put in peat pots with FFOF and then placed under T5-what's the longest they should take to come up through soil?

Startn to sweat!!!!:yoinks:

What could be the problem-I know that initially I had a little high temps-have them in the 70's now consistently and about 1' below t5 to top of plastic lid. just been watering daily with good balanced water.

Any help would be appreciated-can't afford to throw money away again

We just dug up one of the seeds and the sprout part that popped out when the seed cracks open was all blue...I'm guessing it was moldy. Does this mean we're overwatering them?? And if we let the soil dry out will those seeds be any good are have we ruined them? Thank you!!

Yeah bro sound like overwatering, i grow in coco i plant my seeds strait into coco after the paper towel method, i then place them under my light i dont use a dome and i mist them with a spray bottle lightly 3 times a day and usually see the seed in about 24-36 hours and the cotyledons a day later and i only plant my seed about 2mm deep or so just under the surface
good luck bro

OK I've killed those 6. Dang!!!

Alright, we germinated our last 4 from the 10 pack and they've all cracked. We put them in a FFOF/Happy Frog mix and 72 hours later we only have one that sprouted, and it doesn't appear to be doing anything.

We have been extra careful not to overwater these and just been spraying lightly 2-3 times daily. temps have been between 70-80 night/day. We have had the plastic lid partially on the whole time and 1' under a t5

What are we doin wrong?
It looks like we've just ruined 200 bucks of seeds

Any ideas???

oce the bean popup above ground and show leaf...it needs air .....w a little movment....helpz'em breath...the other.two.......
often U need to let a geed germ LONGER than just cracked..it need to develop ataproot.....of some sort...that it will use itself to boost up and sprout.....if u dont let the seed develop a taproot before up plant it....U goot keep the medium ONLY damp NOT moist other wise it will rot......
seed once wet to the core...only then need very little water to really germ......to much will kill'em:2cents:

Water fine germination soil. Create a small hole/depression about the size and depth of a pencil eraser and put the seed in and cover it. It works. The risk of damage in transfer and burial of the towel germinated seed outweighs the risk of a slightly worse germination rate you'd get just planting it directly in the soil medium.

(edited for clarity)

ok the only way i have ever killed seeds was overwatering and nute burning i sprout in lil foam coffey cups with seed in medium b4 i water take a pencil about 1 inch to 1 and a haph inch thats width and depth you need ploop the seed in cover lghtly with medium and water lighty LIGHTLY all you need to do is nip the seed with water to activate it im talking tablespoons a day till you see green life come out of the dirt then you can water a lil more i sprout in generic no aditive poting soil no nutes just soil. when a seed sprouts it has a "yoke" for lack of a better word this means a sprout sprouts with enuf food for a week let it use its own food to build up a root system b4 u smack it with hot ass dirt burning your expensive seeds theres my 2 cents ALSO i have used this method for YEARS with about 99% success rate i recently tried the lil jiffy pots u used and killed 7 out of 9 white widows said screw this wen back to the tried and true meathod and sprouted 9 out of 9 the second round. Its weed it WILL grow in spite of you the only thing you cant add is time so just sitt back take it ez let nature take its course and dont fuck with them to much i killed more than a couple plants just cuz i wount leave it alone good luck man!

When you get your next seeds do this.

directly plant in soil 0.5" deep or 1-1.5cm
Water THOROUGHLY. Make sure that your container is heavy with water.
put it under the lights..

Just make sure the top layer of soil doesn't dry out, but dont try and saturate it again, just wet the top layer to keep the seed moist at the top where it is.

Dont soak the seeds prior or crack them or this and that.
I have 100% germ rate. This is natures way and it works very well.

The only time i have cracked seeds prior is with south african durban poison where everyone says they can't get them to germ. It didn't work well..

that is a specialized technique that should only be used for picky seedlings.

I would do it the natural way.

I have seedlings up after about 50-60 hours on average

Thanks for all the good advice guys. The bad thing is we just germinated 6 more freebie seeds that they sent us, in the moist paper towel. Damn!! I guess we will just wait a little longer on these ones for the taproot to get bigger and then put them in the soil. I think next time we'll use the just put em straight in the soil method. I do this with my flowers and it always seems to work okay! All of the books we've read say to use the germination method but so far that hasn't been working well for us. Thanks again! :abduct:

I have read that the FFOF can sometimes be a little hot for starting seeds, Maybe you have got a bag of hot FFOF that might be what is killing them

After reading your replies we checked our "freebies" and 2 of them had nice lond taproots between 1/4-3/8" so we are trying solo cups with holes in the bottoms and using Happy frog only(this is all we had on hand). and used the tips your replys had for planting them (other than going directly to soil because we had already done paper towel method..) Unfortunately the final 4 of the previous batch(the ones we spent big bucks on) don't seem to be going anywhere at all. The one that did barely sprout with the seed husk has turned grey and drooped. WTF?? and the other 3 made no appearance at all after planting from paper towel. We just ordered seed again so we're gonna go directly into soil next time.. Wonder if it's the soil as you suggested-hope not-got 2 big bags of it! Describe what you mentioned about it being a "hot".. Can we transplant into it later after seedlings are doing OK in reg potting soil??

Anyone have suggestions for inexpensive, good, easy to grow strains. This endeavor has proved to be challenging and discouraging thusfar; but with the monetary/time investment we've already made-WE"RE NOT THROWIN IN THE TOWEL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take care and thank you so very much everyone for your continued support!!!!!!!!!

Hey Newb, I've been growing for over a year and have not purchased seeds for over ~50USD (10 pack)...I bought a few Nirvana strains, and the one I liked most is AK-48, which I still grow today...Green House is also good for the price.

Or just grow some bag seed...for free!

I think this is it-

I think this is it-

I think that the Ocean Forest and perhaps the jiffy/peat pots played a part in the demise of our expensive seeds. We planted 2 of our 3 freebies that developed roots using paper towel into Happy frog and already have sprouted. The other we just planted in reg potting soil and we'll know more in 36hours or so.. We also got away from those jiffy/peat pots and are in solo cups with holes in the bottom..

Shoulda planted freebies first and killled them.............:wallbash:

But, at least we can assume now that the Ocean Forest is probly not a good starter mix for seedlings. I wonder if it's gonna be OK when they're ready for transplant??????? we do currently have one other plant that seems to do OK in it now.

Thanks for the strain suggestion Karmic!

Thanks everyone and keep the advice coming!

Ok the 3 in reg potting soil and HF are all about 2" tall; what is a typical heighth/time you would transplant to their final buckets? We've kinda been leaning on books for info but it seams to be in our best interest to talk to you all on here who do this stuff every day..

Take care and as always we appreciate the help!!!!

It depends on the strain, some strains develop roots faster than others...so, if you want to know when to transplant, check the roots....if the root system has outgrown its container, it's time to transplant...Search for info on transplanting so it goes smoothly and you don't mess up...good luck.
