What's new

viability of Zamal beans?

Q

qanabose

I have a very keen interest in Zamal but have come to understand that the regular bean source have been winding down in their fertility of late. Has anyone here had any recent success germing them whatsoever? If so, please give me the encouraging word. I'd love to regenerate these wild bitches.

Many thanx!

I scraped, I filed, I tried to split the shells with tweezers, I tried heat and I tried soaking in peroxide. The only things I didn't try were cold stratification and gibberellic acid and I can't see the point of cold-stratifying a tropical strain. I still went 0/15 and lost $50 in the process.

I bought four packs on weekend special back in December or so. Planted 5 seeds last April and got 3/5 germ.

hey Kurdunkle,

was that April 2008 preceding December that we're talking about or is it April 2009 just gone by, in which case you'd almost certainly still have your Zamal plants raging away at around 3 months of age, they'd be coming on nicely, even more so if you had em' on 12/12 from the start, wouldn't they???...

um, hang on, which December are we talking about?:kos:

i got 3/4 zamals from gypsy to germ. first tried the papertowel method only.. nada. then scraped the tip a bit and put them to soak in papertowel in warm place, they popped nicely.

i think it would be best to put them straight into soil and give them humidity and warmth.

I started them this year.
They are doing nicely outside in a black out system. Hopefully they will finish by the end of November. They have been flowering for about 3 weeks. The stretch has just started.

This run is a test. If I can finish them outside I want to do a bigger run next summer.

I'd say give them a go. I believe they come 15 to a pack for about $50. Even if you only get 5 to germ that's still a deal at $10 a plant.

That was my logic originally. Just for the record, I'm not saying that they're all duds, just that its a crapshoot and I lost. I am not a newb, BTW.

I hope your grow goes well and the smoke is all that you hoped for:abduct:

hmmm,

I'm still a gambler by nature but boy it hurts when you get a zero germ rate!

last time something like that happened to me on a strain I'd bought 4 packs of Critical Mass and did all the right things and got a zero outta a total of 60 odd beans...I did other strains in the same medium at the same time and they were all popping perfectly...but oh that Critical Mass experience really hurt my mass critically! I got absolutely nothin'!

hmmm...the gamble...

Good companions

qanabose you want to try Zamal, you can find great plants, I have a potato Zamal very interesting, strong sex and with good structure, which have several crossings that should be good, if you want to test 50% zamal you can mandar some beans, Pure zamal but I do not keep potato if your desire is to search zamal 100%, when you could find her mom mandar pollen to be fun.

Will pop my pack of Gypsy,s Zamal soon as the viability is fadeing fast it seems.
Would love to find a male like that one elsocio.

Found some interesting plants in the zamal x skunk Xline pack i ran last year with no issues , may be some left as they were on a special recently.

There were zero hermies found so were suitable to run in a permanent floweroom over many months.
Best one finally euthanised due to mite damage at 275 days but the stump reveged readily , would still be flowering now but for that.

Growthread with some good input here http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=80864

Was an easy manageable intro but expect and hope the pure to be extreme in many aspects , the high on one was scary and freaked out a couple of serious tokers.

qb: elsocio doesn't speak English too well and I think he used a web translator; just so that you don't think he's a raving madman. Neither potato nor pope should have been translated at all: just substitute papa for both :)

I speak a little Spanish and I believe that he made you a very generous offer, so you may want to find someone who can translate it properly for you.

Out of 15 seeds, got 6 to pop, however 5/6 had no growing tip. The other one i stupidly repotted too soon and it got stem rot!!!!!!!

I have one more pack so will try again. For anyone else who has Zamal seeds, mine took from 7 to 30 days to germinate!!
