Bag Seed Bangers- a general discussion

Bag seed is great, but you have to be selective. Seeds from total sponge-weed schwag can be good, but odds are you'll end up with something mediocre, or worse, a complete herm nightmare. Overtime, I've developed a little system I use in selecting bagseed. Nine times out of ten it nets me quality shit.

First things first, how does the bud smell? Like laundry detergent and hay, or like weed? Second, how does it look? Most bud with seeds in it isn't the best, aesthetically, but you should be able to discern some crystal structure and decent coloration, especially after you break it apart and get to the inside of the buds.

Perhaps the ultimate test is the quality of the high. Don't so much judge it on taste, but on the stone itself. Will a few hits get you nice and baked, or do you have to smoke a gram or two to really feel it? Does it keep you going for hours, or do you find yourself sober 45 minutes later?

One final, important consideration: How many seeds were in it? Was the stuff completely seeded, or did you find one or two seeds in an entire bag/QP/LB, etc? This is important, because if you're finding very few seeds in what is otherwise killer bud, you can probably bet they came from an errant hermie flower. Which means, by extension, that the bud you grow from those seeds will have hermie genes lurking right under the surface, waiting to assert themselves.

I learned this the hard way, as there were two occasions people gifted me bag seeds, and said "This was one seed I found in a QP," or "These are the only three seeds I found in a pound," or some crap like that. Both times I ended up with hermies. (And yes, I'm on top of my stuff grow-wise, so it wasn't due to light leaks, temps, etc.)

So all that said, I just found some excellent candidates for growing. These seeds came from a bag of completely seeded bud. The nugs didn't look super great, but it was definitely a leg up from schwag and other garbage, appearance wise. Breaking apart the bud revealed some nice crystallization, etc. What really set this shit apart was the high, though. A few hits gave me a solid indica buzz that lasted for hours. In fact, I was really quite surprised by how good the stuff was, given the mediocre appearance (which I attribute to poor handling/storage). The high was great, just as good as the $60 a bag stuff I've been smokin' on lately.

Here they are, compared to some breeder seeds. Notice how big, plump, and ready to grow these guys are! (They're the ones on the bottom, FYI)

also have problems getting bagseed realy, only once load of weed came to our dealer which had seeds, i baught so much up i managed to get over 200 seeds.

only once after that ive had A bagseed, a single bagseed, from some very frosty bud, thats in water now.

I grew bagseed first, it was a good experience, I learned all about hermies..

but it they were from a bag of weed that was not so great..and the result was ok, not great.. I will only grow better genetics now..

Peace!

I still do a bagseed grow from time to time.Bag seed can be just as good if not better then seeds bought with $....if you know what to look for.

I would usually buy bud in between grows and out of every HP I would come across maybe 2-5 seeds....those are keepers.

The rest is like any other strain...I let it tell me when it wants water or food,I watch for certain reactions to certain treatments, cull any males (which I have had none ever in my growing experiences) or weakilings etc. etc.

This is a bag seed I grew last year.. it had a hard life started in a hydro system then went into soil and left outside very rarely attended to... I had to chop it early cause of a few different pests including whiteflies but it wasnt bad at all..

Those are the exact opposite of what you're looking for, for the reasons I stated above. This is especially true if you're trying to isolate mothers.

There's this popular notion that suggests the rarer the seeds (in a given batch of weed), the better those seeds are. But if there's only a very limited number of seeds in a relatively large quantity of weed, you can bet your bottom dollar they came from hermie pollen.

Bag seed is like a box of chocolates. jawnroot is right about avoiding pot with very few seeds. jawnroot is also correct to scrutinize pot quality. I've been lucky to grow good weed from crappy stock.

Commercial weed seems to be user friendly and large yields aren't uncommon. These 4 plants were vegged for two weeks and flowered under a 150HPS. I got a little over 3 ounces. A three week veg would have easily produced a quarter pound. Not too shabby for a relative nube and a micro grow. The only down side was a 13 week flower cycle.:D

Awesome shots peeps. Here are some bagseeds that ive been growing for the last year and a half. I usually chop them anywhere from day 54 to day 60

I have learned A WHOLE LOT from growing bagseed. The rest from chatting, reading, & following instructions from seasoned growers here on IC.

The first 5/6 plants were sativedom. The other 1 was MIS. 3/6 of the bagseed were hermies, 1 bagseed & MIS were male, & the last 1 was female. This past Sunday was Day 70 of 12/12 & she is really swelling & spitting hairs. She's been going thru a flush for 2 wks now & her trichs are 85-90% cloudy. 95% of her hairs are a pretty orange/peachy color & she smells like chocolate flavored coffee.

A close friend of mine says that she smells like what we call "DRO" here where I from. :yeahthats LOL. I believe I will go ahead & harvest her because I have 3 more bagseed in the tent right now & she is the smallest. Want yeild very much after she is dried & cured for a couple of weeks. PEACE

EVEN IF YOU FIND 5,000 SEEDS IN SOME BRICK WEED..YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THEY HAD BEEN CROSSED WITH IN THE FIELD..MOST OF THE TIME THEY ARE CROSSED WITH OTHER TYPES OF STRAINS AND WHEN GROWN OUT YOU GET A WHOLE NEW STRAIN. AND NOT THAT BRICK IS BAD..ITS JUST THE WAY IT WAS PACKAGED..THERE IS A REASON PEOPLE GROW FIELDS OF THIS BRICK TYPE WEED FOR MANY YEARS..JUST CAUSE IT GOT POLLINATED DONT MEEN SQUAT. i never had a hermie prob with bagseed ever!

I like searching through any and all bag seeds I find. You just never know where it came from or what it might be. Not that I get alot of bags with seeds lol. Every once in awhile some of the mexi-crops that end up down here, I get a couple seeded nugs for myself. Not for the smoke but for the seeds and to see what phenos I can locate.

Never had a single hermie so far but some were def. meant for outdoors based on their growing style. Also bagseed for me always cloned as easy as pie. I think they are bred for that and many other stress tested variations. I think they end up being solid genetics and hope the seeds came from a male they missed versus hermie b.s.

With me still getting males out of the seeds I know it wasn't a hermie issue anyways.

The only thing I can't handle is not knowing what it is and the lineage and is why I love just snagging up seeds or clones.

One of my best strains came from a bagseed, don't let the fact that it came out of someone's bag fool ya. This is the strangest growing plant I have ever seen, it's really ugly and lanky looking....a sativa dominant. It stretches more than anything I have and flower usually runs about 70-75 days. When she's finished you have nothing but solid colas all the way up the branches. She doesn't amber out....you can let her go and go and go...you'll find milky crystals, not very big, but densely populated thoughout your scope frame. When you hit this weed you get a solid dirt and pickled beet flavor that stops you in your tracks.....it's intense. Very stoney high, more than what you would ever expect looking at this wierd plant....she's a winner!!!

It matters if hermie pollinated. The poster above has frequent episodes of "nobody's listening to me." So he locks his cap and shouts what he's only experienced himself. jawnroot gives sound advice on this subject. Fact is easily passed on from teacher to student but the advice given by jawnroot is not fact. It is intuition and it is a skill that is learned.

You can take the above posters advice and learn the hard way or consider what jawnroot has to say about bag seed selection. Hermie plants can be a minor nuisance and they can also be full blown nightmares, destroying other potentially stable plants. When you're playing the educated guess, never go with the so-called fool proof advice. You'll get burned.

kaotic, I see brickseed indica in your sig. What's the difference in bag and brick. Most of the compressed I get has cracked seeds.
