Round pots vs Square pots?

Generally, I can pack square pots more efficiently using less floor space. But for round, I can generally find larger pots (5gal) and wicked cheap. They also seem to have more room for roots to grow out, as well as down.
I friggin' hate grobags and only use for vegging.
Is there a preference? Is there an "ideal" rigid/semi rigid container for volumes larger than 4 gal?

Im currently using 7, 7gallon pots in a 4'x5'x9' room and they seem to be doing more than great for root space and I was able to pack them in there pretty nicely.

Oh sorry, they are round. Square pots that are 5 gallon and up are hard to find and are very expensive... There is a place that I know that sells 5 gallon square plastic pots for 15$ each. And the 7 gallon rounds I am using are good quality and were 10 for 40$.

square pots take longer to get rootbound
so that makes it better to me.

If you're getting rootbound then you have more issues than a square or round pot will solve. Your roots bind up in an attempt to find a way Out of a Less Than Desirable situation. You technically have More growing room in what takes up the same amount of space (you can contain a higher volume of medium) in a square pot compared to a round one. Those corners actually make a difference ... put 4 round pots in a square configuration and you will see the gaps ... now Imagine a room full of them and guess at how much wasted space there is ...

Square pots: utilise space,, and are great for SOG methods

Round pots: irrigate water more evenly,, and make it more easy to tessellate plants

Otherwise it's like tea bags,, round or square,, they both make a cuppa

Generally speaking the BIGGER the soil pot the BETTER!!

Hope this helps :canabis:

Anyone ever try using / finding triangular pots??? :chin:

We sometimes use a large hexagonal planter,, with a rounded base,, and three drainage legs. :canabis:

I am very crazy when it comes to containers

I like to stick to round, but if I could have it my way I think egg shaped would be best

I am convinced there needs to be more testing on containers ( length, shape, material, color... ) If there are different "vibes" / "energy" associated with color, then the shape / size / color / material could affect our plant for the better, or yet worse..

There's these pots called "tree pots" that seem to be perfect for root growth which would most definately improve overall plant growth. And they are not super wide so more air flow and space under the canopy.

The only thing that has ever made me not buy them is the big shipping costs.
Check out the 8 gallon pots. They are sweeeeeeeeet.

How to get 4 and 5 gallon square pots for free:
Step 1- Find a friend or relative with a cat.
Step 2- Ask them if they use scoopable cat litter.
Step 3- Ask them if they can save the containers for you.
If they ask why, tell them that you use them for storage and the square design allows you to save space. Its really not even a lie. :D

On a side note: I've noticed that GH redesigned their Power Grower to have a a honeycomb design. It used to be round.

I saw this thread an I thought that I would spread some knowledge, but Mr.Hades beat me to the punch with it. Those things have me thinking about switching back to soil(its just to easy to pour the water from my res onto the garden and have the neighbors wonder why it does so well). they would be prefect for a perpetual sog grow, and really easy to transplant(or as I like to call it "pot up")

i prefer squares, on average ive seen better root formation after being cut down and examined, compared to roundpots of the same volumes.

:yeahthatsfreakin' fit perfect in one of our small grow closets.....

only bad deal with those was they were kind of flimsy, too thin of plastic for us, when soil dried out and lights made plastic hot and "bendy" not holdin shaped, when soil dried out also created "gaps" in sides of pots, sucked to water unless you got a drain system to catch all that run off.

just spend money and buy pots.

Someone gave me some Scoop Away brand litter buckets and I've never had a problem. They're the white buckets that hold 40 lbs. They're not quite as thick as the round 5 gallon buckets that you buy at the hardware store but they're thick enough.

Go to a big restaurant and ask them to give you their empty mayonnaise buckets. I went to one and the owner told me to come back in a week. He saved me about fifty buckets! They were free because he was going to throw them away anyway. I drilled some 1/2 inch holes in the bottom and have a lifetime supply for free. They hold four gallons. Perfect.
