hi, i am new to growing in containers and noticed lots of talk about
transplanting numerous times. Is there a reason for this?
Is there a reason to not put a clone in a 5 gal container
and never transplant?
thanks to anyone willing to help.

If you put a clone strait into a 5gal pot the plant will concentrate all its energy in growing roots to fill the pot before putting energy into growing the foliage

The idea of transplanting into small pots lets the plant fill the pot with roots quick and will put energy into growing foliage
Faster growth

Thats my opinion

no problems any time

You can put your clones strait into a 5g pot it will just grow slow until the roots are established
Good luck

Also, the roots grow out, and down, so you'll end up with choked out roots at the edges, with just unused dirt in the middle. Using small pots and progressively up-potting will provide you with a much more dense root mass.

I transplant once. I plant seeds or put rooted clones in 3 qt. nursery pots and veg them there. Then transplant into 3 to 5 gallon pots and they stay there until harvest.
