Help me think of something very stealthy to grow in

I was trying to think of something very stealthy to grow in. I would probably put a 150 hps in there if that helps give you an idea for size. Something stealthy in that the average person would most likely never try to "open" it, or go inside it. Also something that its normal for some sort of cord to be coming from. Even better something that its not unusual for a little hum to be coming from.

I was thinking a small fridge. Fridges need a power cord, and they do hum, and although I could lock it, people do normally try to open fridges.

I've seen someone put a 70 hps in a large speaker. Only downside if it makes a humming sound from the fan.

Any ideas?

I heard a fellow at a Hydro store in Santa Barbara say to his buddy, "Hey, this fan would work great for the air hockey table!" I'm done with the micro grow thing myself, but I always thought that was a cool idea. You could probably get one, working or broken - doesn't really matter, for pretty cheap. The older ones usually have sides that go all the way to the floor. You could fit a rather large grow under one if you wanted.

I don't know what your experience is with growing so I'm going to say this too, because it relates to security: Having an inconspicuous looking grow cab can is great and all, but usually smell is the hardest thing to take care of. If you're going to have to fool people on a daily basis, or if others will be in the room that your cabinet is in on a regular basis, it's going to be pretty hard to conceal your grow. i only mention it because I'd hate to have you get caught. I used to grow a small cabinet and switched to a double-door fridge because of the smell. Even then, no one could go into the same room and not smell it when they were flowering.

Thanks for the suggestion and the advice. Nobody would even be in the same room as the grow cab very often. Maybe I'm going overboard on the stealth thing for some people, but I find in this hobby if you take a few extra simple precautions, you avoid a ton of headaches.

If I buy a quality carbon filter and set it up properly, shouldn't I have basically zero smell problems?

That's one of the few problems with forums like these. Sometimes bad information is circulated until it becomes gospel. I have been involved with many different types of grows, including soil & hydro, starting plants inside for outdoor grows & full on flowering them indoors, many different strains from the medical clubs, etc, and I have yet to have or see a grow that didn't smell at all. They were ALL filtered with Vortex fans of appropriate sized (scrubbed the room in under 2-3 minutes) and can-air filters that were of the correct specifications for the room dimensions and fan cfm.

When I grew in that double-door fridge I mentioned earlier, I filtered the air as it was exhausted, and I had a 6" fan on a can filter that constantly scrubbed the room that the fridge was in. It still smelled a little, and the exhausted air went through duct work directly outside. Not so much to me, but to people who didn't live and sleep in that house, they almost always said something about the smell immediately after coming in the door. There are ways to get the smell out, don't get me wrong, but it usually involves scrubbing your exhausted air on the way out, and also having an inline fan with a filter constantly scrubbing the room. It's been my humble experience that if it's a cab, expect the room the cab is in to smell. If you're growing a room, expect the hall to smell a bit. If you're growing an attic, expect the house to smell a little bit. You see where I'm coming from? You need a buffer zone.

This is one of the reasons so many cabinet growers go bigger so after only a few grows. It can be a great way to learn (kept me stoned in college) and maintain your stash, but one plant or 100 plants, you're going to deal with smell to a certain extent, so you might as well grow a legit grow. I mean, if you have to deal with smell and you have to keep people away or take precautions, who wants to do it for a small grow? It's a fixed cost. I'm not saying you have the option, because I understand some people can't grow a whole room. Just realize that not everything you read around here will be exactly the same for you, and even if you have a cab that sounds natural (like a fridge), and look natural (like a fridge), if it smells, people will know what's up. I hate thinking that someone would invest time and money into a grow that gets shut down because the security isn't as tight as they though it would be.

This is my only problem with refrigerators. Folks open other peoples refrigerators without a second thought. I've never seen anyone open someone else's freezer without instruction to do so. Plus freezers have built in locks. Course, you need a place to put it: garage, basement, back porch. A freezer in the living room raises too many eyebrows.

Closets and cabinets are somewhat subject to opening from visitors; People looking for the 5¢ tour. I don't think I've ever had someone open drawers without instruction. Dressers have a socially off limits quality to them that make them good candidates. Slap a small aquarium on top to take the blame for any noise.

Most I've seen anyone try with a speaker is to pull off the grill and that's rare as it is. Problem with speakers is that tweeters are highly directional. There's no doubt where the sound is coming from or, not coming from. I wouldn't use a speaker in the front room unless it were obviously disconnected. You could claim it's broken or being held for a friend. Why it's making a wooshing sound may come up, though.

Sub woofers are omni directional. It's near impossible to determine the source which is why they can go anywhere in the room. As long as there's bass coming from your mains, people will blame it on the subwoofer. Who the hell opens up subwoofers? Question is, can you build a black box big enough to feed your needs yet small enough to pass as a subwoofer for your system?

There's always variations on the C-13. Just put locks on them. I'd keep them out of common areas because locks invite questions.

I really like the dryer idea. Cut the back out,put a padlock on the door from the inside so that the door feels like its stuck shut. You can even run ventilation through the dryer exhaust hose.

Your house. An empty room. Put a lock on the door. Tell everyone to fuck off or better yet, do not have people over to your house. Easy.

inside a room in a house. Yep, a smaller cab. Maybe something the size of a dresser you'd see in a bedroom or smaller. That's about the size of the cab you see in the 150 club thread.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not dead set on anything yet...still kickin ideas around. More are welcome :)

Just keep it simple and don't limit yourself. I mean, if you are just learning, then give yourself plenty of space etc...just use a room, maybe a tent in the room if it's not light tight or whatever. Make your own tent thing, use pvc and pandaplastic, make your area in the room, don't have to get fancy, if you are just learning, you will need to get your temps, air circulation, exhaust and intake all right on top of learning how to grow. Put a lock on the door, done. Don't have people over don't talk. Keep everything in there. Down the road you may want to get a smaller cabinet or space to just veg in while you flower in the main room. Keep it simple though.
