Hydroponic OUTDOOR! Sour D & Bubba

Been wanting to do this for years, although with a different setup then this....

3 years ago I did a decent Humboldt Backyard "Hydro" Outdoor, like 9 blocks from the County Courthouse when I used to live in Eureka =)

It was hydro in the sense that it was soiless/coco medium in 8 gallon buckets that I hand watered coco/hydro nutes every otherday, but I've always been wanting to use flowing, bubbling, splashing water under the HOT SoCal sun.

Now is the time!

As you can kinda see, there is a PERFECT ~4 strip of intense sun that falls inbetween my house and my garage, its SUNNY back there, and both walls are painted with a gloss white exterior paint making VERY bright reflective surfaces inaddition to the direct sun. Any time I was back there doing shit I was squinting so I figured plants should like it nice!

This is a 50 gallon rubbermaid agricultural stock tank [that I normally use to E&F 3'x6' table's]

I then made a little structure out of 1x's that I can set an 8" netpot into that my victims are waaaaay rooted in, I have a small dual output airpump under the edge, a 6" stone under the spot where each basket will be hanging

The only thing I'm worried about is heat, it gets pretty cold at night in the high-desert, so that will swing the res temp back down, but just hot tissue damage and vascular stress, but then, its hydroponic so as logn as it keep it's respiration up, it should be fien, right?

Oh well, we'll see! I know where to get shade-cloth!

But either way, I covered it with panda wrap the plastic gets WARM, even though it reflects so much energy, as long as it the plastic getting warm and not the water!

My dickhead neighbor has the day off and is fucking around in his backyard, so I will put the ladies in there later, but this is them from liek 3 days ago.... it the two up in the table... I have been training/tying them for a month or so getting them nice n wide for the outdoor plans!

Check out the link in my sig to, theres some normal DWC action lying around my digs as well!

Very interesting. I'm curious to see how it goes. Seems like an awesome idea.
How big will these plants get? Will there be any problems if they get too big?
This may be a whole new way of growing :canabis:

Dont really see why you couldnt add a chiller if the water starts getting too hott. I understand that is probobly not what you want to spend you money on, but it will keep those ladies alive.. But has anyone on here actually ever run a chiller outside??? Thats a questions for others to answer.. Anyway I got this tagged!

Pretty neat. What temperature range do you anticipate the rez will maintain?

this is definitely an interesting scenario...being buried would help keep the rez from over heating...i can't wait for the results...best of luck, hella

Perhaps set up a screen to shield the tub from the sun? I'm looking forward to seeing how this will develop.

That is the idea of the panda wrap, it reflects VERY MUCH of the radiant energy, infrared is another story, but the tub will be completly shaded by it....
I was thinking if I have to I might build a little structure out of bamboo stakes or sumpin that will allow me to drape panda wrap over it but with a gap/airspace between res and panda, instead of nearly directly ontop...

Chiller is not gonna be neccessary, it's COLD here at nights.....it hung out all afternoon got full-blast sun all day, now its chilling for the night, well see tomorrow how it feels when I'm fiddling again.... Also you gotta think its outside, so the environment is not stale fan blown recirc-air, but always freshly ambient breeze, and I figure there will be some evaporative cooling effect as well [hope not or a float valve will be in order!]

Now I never really payed attention to outdoor dates, when should I see vegatative growth cease and subesquently expect budset to start to occur? And also expect to be pulling? I have the Bubba Kush and Sour D, I figure the kush will be much earlier, but when? I'm in SoCal, thanks ppl!

I know it does! =)

Desert sun with hydroponic hydration and nutrient delivery?!! Thats like crazy turbocharging! [or so I theorize and hope!]

I dunno? I would like them to grow like a 20 foot vine, but I doubt it :(
I need to get an idea of my natural veg/budset time and I'll try and provied you a more educated idea!

I dont forsee any problems, I mean the wodden fram coudl fail/snap but that would require ALOT of weight, and I was planning on adding a PVC scrog screen that I have laying around that is just like the other one's you can see in my indoor sig link... So they will be fully supported by that so unless some crazy Santa Ana's whips things apart, I dont see any detriments!

{crosses fingers!}

Yeah exactly - with some distance between them you won't be trapping any heat there.

Would it be possible for you to bury the container in the ground?

hey just a thought if your res is being heated by the sun too much, this is what i used to do. go out and buy like 5 of those reusable ice compress and freeze them. Then just drop them in the water, when they melt you can switch it out for a frozen one. it takes alot of attention, but the roots LOVE the cool water, especially if the sun is baking

I've been growing outdoors for many years (northern Cali). I don't pay close attention but I know they start budding in August and end in late Sept. through Oct. All dependant on the strain (and location but we're basically the same location).
Outdoor can grow big heavy plants so be careful. I expect your's may end up very huge.

Cool stuff! I've been mulling over a similar setup. DWC is awesome, but outside I think it will cause too many headaches with temperature - where I live, too hot, all the time.

When temps are an issue, I like to use ebb and flo or passive hydro (hempy style). I'd love to put a rain barrel in the shade, and set it up up with a float valve to set the water level at an inch for a bunch of hempy style containers in a larger kiddie pool.

Right now I have a 4 foot long passive hydro outside with an inverted water cooler jug acting like one of those big glass bulbs you see on TV, to keep the water level at one inch. I covered the whole thing in white plastic and cut holes for the plants to cut down on evaporation. Seems to be working a charm.
