Did I cook my beans!?

Oh boy, not off to a good start here. I set out 9 beans to germ yesterday, moist paper towel on a plate on top of my stereo receiver. I covered it with plastic wrap but there must have been an opening because I got home and the paper towel was totally dried out. Also, the area above my receiver got way hotter than I anticipated, it felt like at least 100F where the plate was. Is there a chance I baked my beans? Can they take that much heat? I have re-moistened the paper towel, put it inside a sandwich baggy and its now on top of my wireless router, its only been about 12 hours but I decided to come here and look for some input on my odds. I only have 6 beans left and I'm hoping I don't have to dip into them yet. thanks

Its hard to say without knowing the temp.

Next time put the wet papertowel in a ziplock baggy or a piece of tupperware.

There's a chance, I've fouled up some beans like that before. It sounds like they weren't in "germ" mode to long, if the water evaporated quickly before the beans really got a good soak, chances are much better that they will be fine... only one way to find out though. If you have to crack into the next set of seeds and are worried about stock, pollinate a few of the buds by hand and do a mini seed run.

Plant directly into your medium and it wont be a problem, I know it is tempting to do paper towel so u can check up on em every 2 minutes but its for yer own good

i did something similar with 30 beans
managed to save 2 and they took 4 weeks to start growing

I'm wondering the same thing about 4 Lifesaver beans..... I placed 4 Lifesaver, 4 Purple Widow, and 4 SweetCindy beans on wet paper towels, on a plate, in a ziplock bag on top of my stereo receiver (each strain in seperate containers). This method works great in winter but it get's a bit too toasty in the summer. Live and learn!

Bingo. Paper towels have no magical powers. They are, however, the fast rack to death, rot, mold, dehydration or broiling as you've just learned the hard way. Don't use them.

Glad to see that Freezerboy agrees too.

9 of 10 popped at 6 days with no pre-soak in my handy-dandy cloner/seed starter.

i've never had a problem using the papertowel method.

I used a wet paper towel, not soaking, not dripping. I call it "saturated", not "super-saturated". I put them in a small ziploc snack bag but be sure not to take all the air out. Leave a lil in there.

I find that the top of my computer tower is the best place. It runs around 80deg or so and will never cook anything. 36 hours and i have taproots every time. Hope that helps!!

Don't put a papertowl with seeds on anyting that can get HOT! Computer towers stay warm at BEST!
