I was about to post that same link, Luaith, but you beat me to it! :rasta:

Interesting things to note from that story:
"A new wave of super-potent marijuana flooded the north suburbs." My buddy and I were saying that the 60 an eighth stuff is easier to find than back in the day. But this story makes this seem much more sinister than it really is. Because with the superpotent stuff, you need to smoke less to get high. Oh sure, you'll have guys who toke themselves unconscious, but they're not getting on the road, unlike what that douchebag Kirk is saying. So actually, the super potent stuff is healthier, people will get less smoke in their lungs.
Trying to outlaw super potent mj is like banning hard liqour and expecting to solve all drinking problems. It doesn't work that way; instead of drinking two glasses of whiskey, the drunk will now have to drink 12 bottles of beer to achieve the same buzz.

Interestingly enough, Kirk got divorced this month. No wonder he's got a stick up his ass.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/05/rep-mark-kirks-divorce-to_n_212082.html

He's probably pushing this bill to deflect attention from his divorce, but from all accounts his divorce was amicable. Wonder what caused it? Him being a dick or him cheating? Or, to be fair, was it her fault? Most likely it's both their faults, but I have a feeling he's probably not a good husband. And now he's taking this high and mighty crusade against evil drugs.

"The weed on the right is ultra-potent kush." Don't believe the hype!

"Prison time and fines will increase by 4-5 times." From 5 years to 25 years, 25K fine to 100k fine [EDIT: actually, it went from 250K to 1 Million]. So basically he's treating good weed like heroin or coke. Fucking A, man. :1help:

I don't think it'll ever pass, especially with a Democratic controlled Congress. This was purely a political move by Kirk. I hope it backfires on him. It's the ones that push morality clauses that end up being the most flawed themselves. Less ye are without sin, thou shalt not cast the first stone...

Link to write him. Make sure you enter the zip code 60004. That is a zip code for Arlington Heights, one of the many zip codes in his district, but you can't write him without using a zip code in his district. I personally used the address for Wrigley Field :D

Here's a copy of my letter

Mr. Kirk,

I am a 24 year old professional artist who makes a decent living, supports himself, and pays his taxes. Recently I learned about your proposed legislation to give marijuana users 25 years of jail time. I sir am a marijuana user, most of the people I know and work with are social marijuana users, studies have indicated that as much as 75% of Americans have tried Marijuana and as many as 50% smoke at least once a year. I've never been arrested, none of the people I know have ever been arrested, and I've never seen any violence or theft connected with marijuana. Your proposed legislation sir is absolutely insulting and screams of ignorance. In an age where the government is becoming increasingly disconnected and self-controlled, legislation like this just induces sense of anger in the populace against politicians such as yourself.

If you would actually do honest research you would find that there is absolutely nothing wrong with marijuana and that it's history and prohibition have been murky and dirty events in American history. You'd also realize the drug war is an utter failure and a huge drag on our economy. In a progressive world with a new leader, I have to wonder why you want to go backwards on this issue. The Republican party is dead, and it's idiotic things like this and your last President which has killed it. You would think the Republicans would actually be pushing for individual rights and pushing for personal freedoms such as the decriminalization of marijuana. But yet you and your party pushes these things, and remains in the dark ages. You say you're about personal rights but then you want take away mine and my choice. This legislation you're pushing sir will follow you and be a dark cloud on your career as no pro-marijuana individuals will ever vote for you. I think this is a desperate attempt by you to get attention from the dwindling herd of ultra republicans and Christians who still buy reefer madness, because there's no way an intelligent reasonable man such as yourself could push such an atrocity of legislation seriously.

In closing sir I'd like to say I will do everything I can to ensure you are discredited and that no person of voting age whom I have contact with ever votes for you or contributes in anyway to you again unless you change your course with this legislation.

Thank you for reading,
My Name Bitch!

PS

Do some research congressman, you sound like an idiot when you talk about "kush".

very nice, physical letters can go here:

The Honorable Mark Steven Kirk
1030 Longworth
Washington, D.C. 20515
(202) 225-4835

I made a bigger post in Toker's Den in a thread about this too, I think a couple of these threads should be stickied and we should organize a real letter-writing campaign through the board.

Another Republican looking to help our cause I see! What a joke! Thats like saying since you sold the rocket launcher your sentence is 10 years and the guys who sold the suicide bomber vest only gets 1 year! Even if it wasnt weed and they werent trying to pass MMJ laws in Ill. it would be corny! Where are all the anti Obama cats and the psuedo-repubs on this? Oh wait, they are still in the other thread trying to convince us that Obama is bad for our cause and that the Republicans are the only ones who are gonna make it better for pot!!!!!

Or maybe they are on other websites with people that don't already know Rep. Kirk is a complete moron educating the Democrat voters that elected Republican Kirk (Obama won Kirk's district in a landslide) that they need to do better next time.

I have always assumed Republicans are control freak tyrants on drug policy. You really need to expand your way of thinking. Just because someone speaks the truth about Democrat politicians doesn't make them a Republican. I'm an equal opportunity basher when it comes to control freak politicians. I wish you would be too. We need more people on our side of the war rather than theirs.

Well, to be fair, Kirk DID emphasize that this penalty would only go for traffickers/distributors, not for simple possession.
So does a 'distributor' include someone who's cultivating but not selling, like the majority of icmaggers?
Even if you're growing a hundred pounds of pot, I don't think you should face the same penalty as having a hundred pounds of coke. Actually, I think all drugs should be decriminalized, but accepting that coke and mj are currently illegal, definitely mj should be treated and penalized as a softer drug, no matter how good the quality. MAYBE hash should have somewhat stiffer penalties, given that it's a processed form of mj, but still nowhere near as severe as the so-called 'hard drugs'.
I hope he gets some backlash for this, and that his stance does not prove to be a popular one. It's attitudes like his that make this country go backwards.

dankitydank

"i got caught with 10 lbs too, how come you in here for longer???"
"cuz the judge was like FUCK THIS SHIT IS RIDICULOUS my court room smells.
3 extra years!!" hahahah nonsense. not even gonna list the reasons we all know.
now backyard meth vs pure crystal, maybe i could see that. nah still stupid.

these politicians in Chicago are such fukin idiots...they had to sell the lottery and they sold parking meters to private companies..... what type of fukin idiots sell parking meters and the lottery....back on topic though this is just freaking crazy and whoever posted on page 1 about his possible connections to the state prisons I agree someone needs to look into this guy and where he is getting money from.....

I wouldn't bitch, I believe this is for Federal Cases, not state Felonies but they can change laws too. More incentive to work for the Mafia, they usually make offers you can't refuse. I was thinking about how the US Covert Funding moves a lot of underpowered drugs due to economics. Now, there is more effort in pushing people the right direction; or it's the wrong, that is for Congress to determine. Kush, I have seen South American Brick shit weed sold and marketed as Kush. I think it's the potency of peoples determination, not the drugs that they use. Personally, I think if the enemy was smart. Congress would be risking, making someone turn a large milk trailer semi into an Ammonium Nitrate message.....but I think people go to prison in America and don't turn into 'Terrorist Regimes'. I never understood the modern Gangster game, but see hype brings heat.

I don't know the Federal Hashish laws, probably more strict as per weight. So start turning Kush or Haze plants into Bubbling goodness. In my state, Hash is allowed in smaller quantities but turns into a harsh sentence fast. Judges do make you hurt, with what they feel.

Honestly, I knew the market was slow for very high priced pot. Dank nugs are not the most profitable fund raising method at this time, which sure as hell this guy gets drug money as most Politicians do! I don't see dank selling like crack, but I'd like to see the US export a lot more. Remember, this combats other countries like Canada and if Mexico pumped out some decent herb for once in a long time them too.......or Columbia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, anyone that ships anything to the United States or determined to resist removal of ownership, properties.

I don't think this law targets growers that aren't selling, why? Because they have to trim that hell out of plants and cure them greatly. You could even say they dumped Kief onto your product, sometimes that is what the bottom of the pound or kilo or jar gets like. I like it for drug control, this could clean up some of the shady California rebels. Apparently people forget the Power of Congress, so intercourse okay!

Is this idiot up for election or something?

Why are idiots like him in government?

I can understand why he wants more people in prison since they provide cheap labor. The new slavery is being in a private prison made to do manual labor except you are not called a slave there.

This legislation is completely irrational. With all the success we've had lately, I've been expecting some sort of backlash.

Yes, you are but usually with the good grace of implying more than asserting. If anyone knows the C-span schedule for public discussion, between Gentlemen of Government debating this effect...........please advise, or private conversations on digital.

I'm starting to find it less and less useful to get caught up in the legalization debate.

3 words-mother. fuck. them.

I'm growing sweet sweet sativa's in my apartment like it's going out of style regardless of what these animals clammer on about in city hall. I get too angry and go batshit over these tards, which brings the irony full circle, and more importantly, proves to be a waste of weed.

This tokes for you, Rep Kirk.

better marijuana is more desirable and it costs much more than 'avg weed' so this republican is mad that 'drug dealers' are making a killing.

THe whole 'its mroe potent' is jsut an excuse and a way to brainwash people. Im sick of the DEA and everyone acting like they are needed so bad because we are now dealing with 'more potent marijuana.'

Until they have solid medical evidence and court cases that involve 'high potent marijuana' with car accidents and deaths/injuries.. then they need to shut the hell up.
