Tips to growing sativas

I

Iron_Lion

I've been growing for quite some time now, as time goes by I seem to grow more and more sativa leaning strains. I was wondering if there was any tips to growing sativas over indicas. has anyone ever noticed sativas have different nutrient and/or micro nutrient requirements? I've noticed on my last few grows my plants yellow up a little bit, i use EWC and cal mag, thinking I had all the bases covered, anyone know what I could be doing wrong? I'll post a pic of my recent skunk.

-Lots of training
-smaller containers (the idea is they will hinder vegitative growth, but not cola size)
-patience

There's a product from Bonide called "Tomato & Blossom Set Spray", and it's ingredient is called "kinetin". I have had good experience using it to control stretch in sativas. Training is also very important. I zig zag train the main stem to keep it shorter. It makes it look like a serpentine when it's done, but it really works well. The other plus is that it makes them stand up a lot stronger, which in a lot of sativas is vital.

I like to to flower clones when they are between 6 and 8 inches tall after they have vegged for 1 week. no more than 2 gallon buckets and for really long (15 week sativas) I start them off at 11/13 (day/night) at 7 weeks I change it again to 10/14. very nute sensitive. so feed lightly. I've only grown old school haze, wich will go on forever unless i use this regimen. dont know if this helps.

I like to ScRog them.
Nutes are usually different (more in my experience)
Make sure you have everything dialed in as Sats will take much longer to grow (meaning if you get root rot or deficiencies early on... you still have 10+ weeks to keep the thing alive).

Good luck!

I don't know wtf I was thinking when I made my last post but that pic is a straight up N deficiency.
I also agree about flowering clones.

go light with the nutes.
i also feed em N until 3-4 weeks post 12/12.
especially if they go about 12+ weeks

Once I flush,I always topdress my plants with new soil, which in return has fresh nutes,in paticular N. They seem to stay green until about 1-2 weeks to go. Not the usual 33-35 day mark with the yellowing. I also feed with low N guanos and nutes. Plants love it every time!

So far this thread is made up of mostly very bad advice. Sats want big light, light nutes, and room to stretch, scrog is great. The small roots comment above is wrong, stunting your plants with chems is wrong, unhappy plants. Sats just need head room mostly.

^^yup. Lotta root and head room, nice air movement and a 'natural' environment will have your sativas happy and healthy. environment is much more important than nutes w/sats....as with indicas, but especially true for sats.

@ I_L: A potential problem is that you're referring to a line(SK#1) that was originally a sat-dom polyhybrid but has been bred since the '80s for indica traits as a sat. We're all geared up to answer a sativa question that doesn't really apply to you.

I have to respectfully disagree with you guys about root-binding. Sats do much more with less root mass than indies and its a great way to control stretch. I have seen some awesome and healthy plants in tiny containers (1 gallon or less). I think that if you don't have the headroom for a full-blown sativa, its a legitimate choice.

Vertical is great way to grow sats indoors. depending on the stretch and flower time flower a rooted clone for a 4 foot plant at harvest or a 2 week old clone for 6 foot plant at harvest. You will def have to experiment with each strain.

I've grow C99 and Red Congolese, but I don't consider these to be real sativas. I'm taking a big plunge into sativa growing with a Kali Mist I have flowering now and some SSH and Island Sweet Skunk I'm going to be flowering in the coming weeks. All the plants must stay below 3' in height.

My basic plan of attack is
(i) Veg to sexual maturity with some pruning to thin the growth. The Kali Mist I have flowering now was vegged for 7 weeks.
(ii) LST so that the leaders stay short.
(iii) Super-cropping in flower to keep things compact and even the growth out.
(iv) Light on the N in flowering. The Kali is growing in FFOF and I haven't given it anything save the left overs of a v. weak nutrient solution once that I was using to feed moms.
(v) Provide root space in flowering through transplants.

So far so good with the Kali. A little over two weeks into flower it is budding up and the stems are turning woody which is an indicating to me that the stretch is slowing. It is only about 2' tall.

Kali Mist @ about 12 into days of 12/12
