Scrubber idea

Ok so i am setting up a grow in a dresser currently and have limited space for the scrubber. I do not want to external the scrubber from the grow area and push through. I have an idea to save space use a duct tee at the intake end of the cooltube and run a scrubber setup from that, and i have two designs in mind here is a pic let me know what you think as i would like to move on and get this growing but i am unsure as to what way will work best. Thanks, b420

I am not sure I understand what you are doing on the top idea, but the t with what looks like two filters on either end would work just fine.

The other one may work great too, but I am not sure what you are doing so can't comment on it.

Also, do you have any space above the light? I have run carbon over top of a light, with a u shaped piece of flex going down and into the air cooled hood before...

Just run a regular scrubber filter before the cooltube with airflow going like this:

outside->intake ports->room/cabinet->carbonfilter->cooltube->exhaust

Nothing outside the cabinet that way, you can build std design cyclindrical filters from the DIY tutorials which will ultimately be more compact that the "T" style thing you're considering. You can mount the filter horizontally or vertically, or just place it upright on the floor.

here's the DIY I've used to build a few, very well done IMO. Add a thin strip of tape to the long edges of the screen material right before rolling the hose over it to keep from snagging and keep from having to clip off all the pointy ends of the screen.

With the top idea, I am thinking about making the scrubber to be internal in the straight piece of the tee. put a mesh screen cylinder inside the tee and fill the mesh with carbon, so that the two open ends of the screen are cased in with carbon.

If I understand you correctly, youre trying for very compact and light to mount right onto the cool-tube. Get a plastic round or square sandwich tupperware thing about an 1 1/2 to 2" thick. Cut outside diameter of cool tube into bottom of tupperware box. Now fasten a very fine mesh (pantyhose) with wire tie wrap (thick one) about 3/8" from edge of cooltube and trim excess mesh. Place cut out tupper on tube and fasten with another wire tie so that box is firm on tube. Take lid of tupper and cut hole leaving an inch or so of a flange in case we need it. Strech pantyhose over box and snap lid on. Poke, prod and abuse a lil to see if it will hold your loose charcoal filter media. If not by friction ,then just glue it to lid or use a 3M scrubby pad instead of screen. Box of aquarium charcoal at wally world fills the box...

Bam ... light, cheap and no stink....reuseable. Someone said Wally had Rubbermaid mesh pencilholders and they used 2 to make a similar rig one inside the other. Another way to fasten the box to the tube would to see if a 4" pvc slip fitting fits over your tube snugly. Then cut a piece with a saw (cut-off saw SLOWLY) to fit from shoulder leaving 3/8- 1/2" or so and then cut that thickness again. If loose wrap tube with some aluminum tape and if tite cut rings with handsaw to expand.

Make sure your tupper lid (and your cabinet) is big enough to have a hole in it 5 1/2" so the fan can pull. Let us know how it works. Good luck.

Another way is to just fill the pantyhose with enough charcoal to fill the box, knot it and snap the lid on. But that would make it too easy and there would be no swearing involved.

Let me know if I'm a genius....I need the validation...lately my dog only comes when I call him if he sees food. ;)

Yeah, the problem with your box design is that there's no way to pack the carbon enough to force the air to flow THROUGH the carbon, where it will do a great job, rather than just around the outside edges taking the path of least resistance and just brushing over the carbon. I guess you could overfill it and they force the lid closed, but that would probably just warp the lid and when the carbon naturally compacts from vibration/settling you'd have even more free space around the outside of the carbon and more air getting through without sufficient treatment.

If you were going to make something like that, and want it to run "in-line"
why not just get a straight piece of PVC the same inside diameter as the outside of the cooltube, make a few "filter bags" out of panty hose filled with carbon, then pack those "filter bags" down on top of each other until you have a tightly packed carbon bed. Attach it to your ducting and your're done. No cutting holes, no wire ties, no tools needed at all in fact...and if you pack it tight, I'd wager it's WAAAAAYYYYY more effective than the box design.

Elcap , I think your missing the point. You want to flow thru the charcoal. By packing it tight you restrict airflow. In any event, theyre granules...air wont flow around them unless you pack 'em til they turn to diamond..;) . Picture the box full...full means no space. Air gotta go thru full...simple as that. If the end of the 4" tube is covered, there IS no space. This is a dresser grow. B420's not looking for a brute force 10 atmospere type system. Most charcoal systems seem to use just an 1"-1 1/2" of media.

And if I'm full of shit, then B's lost $1.00 tupperware box and his girl's out half a set of pantyhose.

And he's not stuck with a 600 cfm Humungo trying to get air thru a pipe hammered full of pantyhose and briquets.

Well to let all know I went with the top design.

Used:

(1) 4" duct tee
(2) 4" clamps
Some hardware cloth I had laying around
An old pair of the ex's hose
The charcoal out of the old carbon filter I made
Some aluminum tape

This is what I have come up with:

I made an enclosed cylinder full of carbon out of the hardware cloth, covered it in panty hose, and fit it into the straight section of the tee. I covered the ends with a bit more pantyhose and secured it all into place using the clamps. The air can enter the duct run through either pantyhose covered hole but must pass through a 4" x 8" cylinder of carbon.
Tested it with the new fan I bought today, pretty sure this is gonna work pretty well.

That should work well, assuming the fan can pull through that much carbon ok. If it can, you won't smell a thing, as the air is going through like 6 inches of carbon or so.

Love the idea, thanks for sharing.

Thanks DonkeyPunch, I am pretty sure this will work great just wanted some other opinions. I do have a huge fan for what I am doing and I love the idea that it has to go through a solid cylinder of carbon before anything else.
