Hi im going to the dam on june 1st, people keep telling me "its changed, its not the same as it used to be, you can only smoke in certian areas and whats bought in the shop must be consumed in the shop". ive been 3 times before but last time was 07.

can anyone help me on what has changed? i know there is a smoking ban in shops (cigarettes). a friend went to the can cup and said that not much has changed, only the bigger shops are still running with a lot of smaller ones being closed.

thanks for takin the time to read this, im really after feedback frfom people who have been recently in the last 5 months or so

thanks..

Hi

Smoking tobacco is banned in the "workplace" and so this means that some coffeeshops have built special smoke areas inside their shops to accomodate us . Any coffeeshop that tells you that you can only consume their wares inside or that you must buy wares to sit inside is just trying to rip you off. my best advice is to laugh in their greedy fat faces before walking out the door and on to the next place.

There are a number of tobacco friendly coffeeshops, although I don't live in A'dam so can't tell you which they are. The one I DO know you can smoke in the Kashmir Lounge... most if not all of the shops will allow you to smoke "pure/neat" whilst inside allthesame

Hill Streat Blues near red light have two nice smoke rooms with water view, in the back.

Remember to be kind, and bring used cups and glasses to the bar when you leave, so the employees can avoid the smoking zones as much as possible.

susies Saloon may be missing a chef, i saw him carted off in an ambulance while i was there on saturday, apparently careless use of sharp kitchen knives can hurt.

Oh, as for rules. I was there this weekend and nothing was really new except for the smoking in shops being barred but i did not see if enforced at all and plenty of people were still skinning up with tobacco.

All the changes i saw were normal and should not really affect your smoking experience.

Haven't been to Amsterdam for a while ,, friends over there tell us that main change to coffeeshops has been the bad attitude that many 'workers' and 'owners' have picked up,,, disrespectful,, discourteous,, dishonest, expensive, ignorant towards patrons!

the smoking ban,, reflecting how Amsterdam is loosing it's Dutch Courage... how stupid EU law's will gradually outlaw cannabis smoking in Amsterdam also!

Peace all

ha you don't know the dutch , they defend their rights , in maastricht all coffee/bar owners allow tobacco smoking, they just work together and pay their fines together

They also think the laws are bullshit

Ah how typically Dutch! Everyone should know ahead of arriving in Holland to expect a whole 'nother level of service in Amsterdam. If you're from the US or England you've probably never experienced such incredible service unless you've been on the "Midnight Express" and ended up in a Turkish prison...

The Dutch are a true socialist society. They believe they are all equal (and we, as cannatourists are far, far below them). Because the Dutch believe in "equality" (for white native Dutch only!), to serve us as we expect to be served, is completely beyond their ability to comprehend. If they even had a clue as to what real service was, they would laugh at it and continue chatting with their friend for 20 minutes while lines grow ever longer waiting for service.

For instance, when you book a three star Dutch hotel, expect it to be like a two star fleabag hotel in some crummy section of town. Throw all your expectations out the window. Likewise even some 4 star hotels are going to leave you wishing you'd brought a tent and sleeping bag...

Rule of thumb - automatically subtract at least 1 star from published ratings on Dutch hotels. It's Dutch after all...

Some coffeeshops definitely have rude staff, esp. those who insist you buy more than a drink. Avoid such places. Experience rudeness? Make a scene. Leave in a huff, suggesting everyone waiting in line to purchase cannabis do the same. That might get their attention (probably not, not much does...)

Definitely make your feelings known online by going to places like my site: http://www.hiptravelguide.com (shameless plug) and post up your comments. Of course it helps to check such sites first to know where to go and which places to avoid.

I know one place you will never be disappointed in, and that's Coffeeshop Basjoe. The two brothers who own it, also run it and are very friendly rastas with great service.

The other bigger shops hire low paid ppl who undergo rigorous training on how to serve cannatourists... they send them to a Turkish prison to learn how to do it right... ;)

Hehe ^^

A friend recently returned from Amsterdam with a similar story...

With only had a few hours to kill before his flight home he dropped into a coffeeshop up in the Red Light Area close to Central Station. He orders a coffee,, sits down at a table, and pulls out a left-over baggie (0.5g skunk) and proceeds to roll a spliff.

The 'lady' comes over and barks "You can't smoke cannabis from another coffeeshop here!" My friend asks "Why not?" . She says that "You can only smoke cannabis from our own menu here". Then she asks "Do you still want the coffee?" He is polite so he purchased the coffee, drank it, and left for home.

Personally, I n I would have told her that she was "quite clearly missing the point" and that "before her and her fellow generation of neo-nazis moved into town Amsterdam used to be a liberal and liberating place!"

How times change...

Yeah,, we hear Maastricht and many other places in NL are still keeping it real on the smoking ban front :canabis: As it should be,,, the majority of ppl working in coffeeshops smoke illegal weed mixed with legal tobacco ..lol

Next they'll try and ban the cannabis .. lmfao what a joke :biglaugh:

I was there last December... Heard that Mushies were gonna be sold until the stores' stocks were all gone... I did get some, but did not end up eating them.....

Yeah, peeps were still rolling up tobacco joints, but not as much....

And you Guys, lol, lighten-up on the Dutch...! lol...

I know, I know, maybe not the most 'animated' folks on Earth, but some of the most polite, for sure... That is a main reason why I return often as I can.

Its' good to be able to laugh at all people equally, though, like Don Rickles does..... I guess....lol.

Some of the out-of-the-way C'shops are a bit low on the friendliness scale.

And yet, an apparently run-down shop may be a hidden gem, as well. Glamour is not always Quality..!

In my Humble opinion... It is Easy to waste Euros on buds you will regret buying. So many shops... They really are fun... You will be happy. Do not frequent any place you do not like for any reason.

The smoke is not cheap...!

Because of the sometimes commercial nature to the buds, generally, I smoke more hash than pot, based on frequency...

I just love all the fantastic flavours to all the myriad hashes in the Coffeeshops that are NOT often, if ever, available in the You Ess Ay. Although I make very high quality bubble - the taste of the Orient cannot totally be duplicated...!

My personal favorites are Grey Area for buds... Resin for Hash. Katsu for general quality. The Noon for the Blueberry or Blueberry haze, if it is good. Last December, they had none.

Dampkring/Pink Floyd/Tweede Kamer for all reasons - especially the RIFMAN Hashes.....

Amnesia, Abraxas and the new Greenhouse C'shop to hang out. Barney's too, can be fun with a few good nugs here and there.. Opens early... Ask James what's good. Katsu for local flavour. Cool neighborhood...

I Eat some Dutch food... But, mostly Ethnic foods and a mostly veggie diet, in A'dam... With all the choices, it is easy to eat healthy..... Very little or NO alcohol. Maybe a nap most days for a couple hours.... Then I find that I remain energetic and healthy.... Waking up every day VERY ready to go... Even if the last night was a late one...

N-Joy...!!

And a Hearty Hello to all Amsterdammers....!!!

Only been there once.. man, I wish I could stay there(or anywhere in Holland...my ancestry run deep in the dikes lol) Maybe when my tattoo art apprenticeship is done ;-)
Yeah...mushies, MAN, it was such a rush to just see grown mushrooms in every shop! and I have to agree; the Dutch are a very kind people, and then again so are the Germans and Swiss... Anyways, the Dam is the Dam. I feel part of Amsterdam, even though I don't live there, or in Europe for that matter. (anyone relate to this?lol)
Good people = good memories.

I found the Dutch people nice for the most part. Just like most people in any part of the world. If I smiled or greeted a dutch person walking by they would smile or nod back, for the most part. There were grumpy or shy people as well who wouldn't reciprocate my greeting, of course. The weed was good, that 's all I care about. I cannot wait to return. Just need the money.

Speaking of which, I have a 2006 USA Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar for sale, Eric Johnson model. Thin lacquer finish, extremely resonant unplugged. PM me if interested!

i just got out of the dam and now i am in brugge. for the most part a lot of the dutch that served me were very polite. amnesia definitely had the nicer staff while i was there and the damkring had amazing weed at a great price (their cap is about 13£ i believe). i noticed alot of the rude twats included people from other countries living/working in the dam. some of the brits in the coffee shops wouldnt even answer my questions directly... snobby pricks. they were not true dutch citizens. just remember that you have the cash and you'll never fuckin see them again so if you feel like they have mistreated you as a costumer politely tell them to fuck off and move on down to the next shop. theres plenty of beautiful shops and flowers in the dam. just stop by the cannabis college and ask around. everyone is extremely knowledgeable and friendly there. you gotta have the patience to find a great coffee shop for you. remember, always be polite! giving it right back to a rude one will just satisfy their appetite for confrontation. don't give them that satisfaction; it will piss em' off even more.
