havent heard much on this forum about theese, anybody have any experience, was wondering if they run much cooler having no hood to trap the heat?

I remember a thread where this was talked about.
It seems that while the reflector is a good idea the growers that used vertical bare bulbs were happier and spent less.
So I remember reading you get more out a vertical bare bulb than a horizontal reflector bulb.
Myself I don't have experience and maybe someone will comment who does.

Vertical bare bulb in a correctly designed grow room (think stadium style) should theoretically outperform a bulb in a hood.
The reason being that the light will emit lumens equally in a 360 degree pattern making full use of the bulb.
A reflector and bulb hung horizontally will use the facing surface of the bulb...but a good portion of the light is subjected to restrike and must bounce from the reflector back down to the plants. The inverse square law would suggest that this reflected light would be less intense.

I ran a pair of gavita copys (reflector bulbs) some years back and best I can say is they did the job......they did run cooler then bulb and hood but the later gives better spread imho.
As these where copys they may not have been as good as the original product which in my local are about 5x the price.
