What's new

omg a first grow of the dreaded marihuana plant

So, finally I have started first grow. This is strange territory to me so any advice is very welcome.

Cabinet is a thing from walmart, all cheap plywood. Weatherstripping to lightproof, with black duct tape in places like hinges. White painted interior. Bracing was installed since most shelves are removed except for one near top, to hold electricals, and overall cabinet is semistealthy; the weatherstripping shows and screws and bolts are plainly visible on side that faces into the room but overall it is just another storage cabinet in a basement. So I could compromise on stealth somewhat.

This is cabinet information: floorspace 2.5 square feet and usable grow height 3.5 feet. Intake about 45 square inches and exhaust about 20. Exhaust involves 2 120mm computer fans each rating 87.5 cfm according to manufacturer wired to AT computer power supply. Lighting is 23W CFLs in bathroom fixture wired to old computer power cable. Four are 2100K and four 6500K. Presently the bulbs are about 7 inches above pots since I am worried about excessive dryness/heat; after 3 hours the very top of soil was dry though moisture was right beneath, and uncomfortably warm to the touch. Temperature inside cabinet is 78 degrees. Outside 71 degrees. Humidity 40 percent so I think I will have to mist soil/seeds often. Good thing I am out of work.

Seeds are 4 Mandala Seeds' Speed Queen and 1 G13 Blue Venom. Venom arrived with cracked shell and black specks on inside of baggie so I am not expecting it to be viable but planted anyway to see if I am wrong. This morning I threw all five in water and soaked for 9 hours at which time a light tap sent all to the bottom except 1 Speed Queen. All went into soil. Which is 30% mixed with perlite. According to my soil tester which needs replacing for being imprecise pH is 6.5 and N/P/K reading 25/6/25 ppm in approximation. This is a Rapitest electronic unit that gives instead of precise ppm measurement a scale from 'too little' to 'too much' and explains in manual what value each roughly corresponds to.

I have a nagging feeling I am doing something very wrong.

Since I ran into delays last month I did lot of reading, mostly on this forum. Thanks for your comments! and that 'dreaded' part is because I am way too easily amused by Reefer Madness type propaganda :)

Question for anyone reading - how often do you water seeds in soil? No sprouts showing yet but since they have been in dirt less than 15 hours I am not really panicking over this.

try to keep em humid before they sprout..like some saran wrap over the tops...and don't worry too much about light until they get a few inches tall...just keep the light close...

Lookin pretty good! You havent done anything wrong that I can see so far, so dont worry about it.

As to watering seeds in soil.. I usually water the soil pretty well before I plant the seed, then only spray with a squirt bottle if the pot feels like it's getting light (drying out). Usually I will only have to spray once or twice a week or so. You will quickly get used to the weight of a dry pot of soil, or wet, and then it'll just get easy.. something you'll just learn as you go.

At three days this is the first sign of life, and only one out of five seeds. Worrying me since this doesn't really look very healthy.

mix looks a little wet friend
now that you see it up, let that cup dry completely out
then water well until thoroughly saturated
then let dry completely again

repeat over and over till chop day
proud to see you on your first grow :respect:
don't give up, and keep reading all you can here in the growers forums
best of luck to you friend !!!!
:smoweed:

Overwatering? All right. After soaking soil in very beginning when seeds went in I have been giving cups a few squirts of water bottle in their evening and morning. Which is 10:00 and 3:00 respectively to give 17 hours light and 7 darkness. No real reason for this schedule except it is convenient for me.

Thanks for your advice Brother Bear, I will let them dry awhile!

And now two hours after posting last update I have another sprout visible just at soil level.

Congrats on your first grow!! Looks good so far, I especially like the height of your cab and the adjustable light bar. You should do well with this one.

You should do well with this one.
I hope you are right because I am slightly worried.

Out of 4 planted only 2 have come up and from others there is no sign of life; after 5 days I think they are dead. Technically 5 were planted but one was damaged and I did not expect it to prove viable but had hoped it would surprise me. Also first plant seemed stuck in its shell even after second showed leaves. So I sterilized tip of knife and tried gently as possible to pry off seed casing. This does not seem to have damaged her because since then I have seen fresh greneery although not yet leaf development as in second plant.

Anyway they have been watered after having the pots mostly dry and now I am considering germinating two more seeds, this time in paper towels.

Think I should have made thread in Grow Diaries since I will be fussing over it and updating daily, or near daily, at least at beginning stage. First grow! I am so excited.

#4 seems to be doing okay. Residue from where seed hull adhered is seen on one leaf. Spots are from light focusing by beaded water after I watered with misting bottle. From now on will mist ground and bottom of stalk or water from cup.

#1 received surgery in form of light tugging with tip of razor blade to dislodge inner seed hull. While #4 grew #1 showed no changes over three days so I decided to help a little.

Brown outer seed hull is off to one side. Inner layer seems stuck? shouldn't this form a leaf? Three days and it did nothing so I levered it off to side to expose tiny frail green leaves.

Hoping she will survive.

Hoping she will survive.
She didn't.

Length of root extended less than 1/3 inch into soil. I believe I waited too long with surgery.

Survivor:

12 days after planting beginning to look like cannabis with a little extra on the side. It seems I am growing grass. And have weeds in my weed.

Sorry to hear about your loss :( I had a seedling die from the same thing (seed itself stuck over the leaves and waited too long to remove it) just the other day.. so I feel for ya. However your survivor is looking good, and if all else fails, you can take a couple clones from her when she gets bigger to compensate for the other seedling dying.

Well :D

You've learned why it helps to practice on free bagseed :)

Congratulations on not killing ALL of them! You're off and running now.... :woohoo:

Looking forward to the results of your research into this wonderful endeavor. :D

Suggestion. You may want to move the thermometer down to the plant level; that will give you a better idea of what the canopy temp is. Without that, you can have some real problems, but it's looking good buddy.

Hydro-soil - bagseed? None available. Although it is a good idea and I should check into obtaining some. Plus I hear it comes with free weed in same bag!

j.guit.err - why in hell did I not think of this? Thanks for the suggestion!

16 days old now.
She (heh I hope) will be joined this week by new seedlings. Before I plant I am changing the soil but it will be another day or two before I can get bag of Fox Farms Ocean Forest from local hydro store that is actually not very local at all.
