tomatoes like asoil slightly more sour than MJ, so you should top-dress with coffee grounds for a while.

mmmmm tomatoes! what varieties did you plant? I'm guessing determinate ones, since you are in containers, but one never knows. I got a shitload of brandywine going. I'm taking an anti companion planting chart stand, and I've interplanted brussels sprouts (they will all be supported by the same structure).

ah! brandywine - the best tasting beafsteak imo! - have you tried cooking with them too? - delicious!

thats a strange mixture mj - sprouts like firm alkaline soil whilst toms like loose acidic. - your sprouts may end up being blown.

make sure you plant hundreds of each or otherwise the results of your experiment will be worthless ;)
just kidding :nanana:

lol yeah, I know, but i am testing this "pH doesn't matter" theory. trying to think positive. I'm the only one in the group crazy about sprouts.

ok, I have no where left for the sprouts! The idea is that as the tomatoes die back I can start encouraging the sprouts (it's a full sun plot) and harvest around christmas. They are long island improved, so they should shoot up quick). Also we are talking about a 75'x 75' garden, so at least my non-hybrid sprouts (heirloom) will have a chance (they are over by some peas). The soil where they are now is not optimized for anything. It's just pure municipal compost. There is one spot where I added some winter barley and turned it under.

this is actually a community garden, only the garden community is like 5 people. We haven't had too much resources, and are still trying to take over from the grass, but we are almost there. I have started the big compost going, but for now we rely on municipal compost.

Our style is truly communal, no plots. Harvest are shared. I'm hoping we get our last delivery of compost soon, becomes it is getting time to plant my big "three sisters" garden, which I am excited about.

Here is what I like to do with tomatoes:

kettle of boiling water
big saucepan full of tomatoes

pour the boiling water over the tomatoes, cover for 3-5 minutes, or whenever you get to it. Rub off the skins and place whole in a ziploc bag. To make summer in winter tomato sauce, wait until december, and fish out a bag from the freezer. much easier than canning and tastes better too. yum!

give it a try mate - the lime for brassicas is largely to discourage club-root. just firm them in really well (i tread the soil down) and then try and leave it a bit looser for the toms. if you space em well you should be able to do both.

sorry off topic to the thread!

ill try your toms recipe - you try mine - slice an inch thick and fry - serve with full english breakfast (vegetarian version in my case)

Im growing 2 types of san marzano, opalka, beefsteak, and roma. only 8 of the marzano's are in containers, in expensive soil. so you say i shoulnt have added the lime...? will they be ok?
