So I was told by somebody that I could build a shroud for a window A/C so that I could run it on the inside without people being able to see it from the street. Can anyone explain how to do that, or have a link?

I had a window a/c unit mounted in a closet door. then I took a tuberware container and mount a 6'' flange to one side and the mounted a duct booster fan to it. I then took the tuberware container and mounted it to the back of the a/c unit( without blocking the side vents. I then removed a recessed can light from the ceiling and mounted another 6'' flange there. then I just ran thermalducting from flange to flange.
so basically its just pulling air from the room and pushing the hot air into the attic. my closet was chilled and the room never got hot.

That's hilarious. Stoners are an ingenious bunch for sure. What do you do about condensation tho? Drill your pan and drain somewhere else?

yup - build a box around the backside of the ac (where the hot air blowers out). Attach a flange to this box so you can attach ducting and route it away from the area.
Attach a duct register component (from home depot) to one of the intake sides. (tape off the other)
Then use a nice fan to BLOW air into the unit (side vent with flange).
By blowing you'll prevent any smell from getting sucked out of your room.
Make sure you catch the drip near the back of the ac.

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a portable A/C unit??
I picked one up on e-bay for $300 shipped.
12,000 BTU only 935 watt (most 12K BTU have a much higher draw-cost more to run).
Its bad ass and can be used in many configurations.
A couple things I learned and wasn't happy with is:
A) They run constantly, even when the condenser isn't (not blowing cold air).I haven't checked yet, but I'm sure Its drawing a lot less power when its just the fan. However I wanted something that shuts off when it reaches the desired temps. Window units are this way too, I an Electrician but I know very little about A/C because personally I dislike it...which brings up my other problem with them...I like fresh air and so do plants.
B) They blow out the duct...essentially recycling the air (not to mention odor contol issues). I'm all for recycling...but not AIR!! And it doesn't make any sense to blow in fresh but 85+ degree temps into an air conditioned room
I hope your able to "beat the heat"
Always seems to be my biggest battle...
I need a location that has basements (Not swamp land) because this attic shit sux...

I've heard nothing but bad things about portables, plus I was thinking I'd need 15-20,000 BTUs to cool my 6k 11x10x8 room...

I'd go larger then that phattybudz. I'd go at least 24k btu...unless your lights are properly ac'd..I guess you can go less. But why risk it.
Better to go large and have it run less..then go small and have it overworked.

I ended up picking up a 24,500 BTU LG air conditioner, I am stoked it's gonna be nice and cool in there... Thanks for the links/advice everyone. Now how/where to mount it..!?
