in summary, phenotype is just the physical attributes that a creature/plant passes on
i'll try to clear it up a bit! phenotype is the word used to describe what genes are turned on in any individual organism.. in layman's terms genes are passed onto offspring and phenotype is which genes are expressed and also what happens as a result of the environment the organism is in (physical characteristics)... on the other hand, genes are passed on. a way to think of this is that if you chopped off a rats tail (please dont, rats have always been nice to me!) then that could be considered its phenotype, however it will not pass on this phenotypic characteristic (chopped tail) to its offspring.
So would it b that if I had a plant that could turn purple and it doesnt does that mean that it isnt a phenotype... or if it is purple it is a phenotype..
you just have the definition to phenotype confused mate! Any physical description is what we see to be its phenotype. a better example is with humans.. maybe your mom has blue eyes and your dad brown.. they most likely passed on genes to you that could lead your eyes to be brown OR blue.. your phenotype is whichever one of those actually happened.
What you are saying leads me to believe that people should be saying like this is my lanky pheno or small pheno or we cause that is the trait it is portraying.. yet people just say that there plant is a pheno and nothing else..
