Majority of Californians for Legalization of Cannabis

56 percent of Californians now support the legalization (not decriminalization) of marijuana. There is currently a bill before the California Assembly, The Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education act (AB 390), which would create a regulatory structure similar to that used for beer, wine and liquor, permitting taxed sales to adults while barring sales to or possession by those under 21.

I have read this bill and it is an extraordinary attempt to define what should be legal and what should remain illegal under California law. It includes everything from where marijuana can be sold and to whom, to which paraphernalia items should no longer be illegal (including bongs, pipes, vaporizers, bubble bags, etc.). Only chemical extracts of cannabis would still be illegal (butane).

I am confused. This is the 2nd thread about this media blurb, but was this bill not even able to make it out of committee?

That is from the State site for tracking legislation. Can someone 'splain what's up?

56% i wonder how valid that statistic is. i have lived in california 3 years ago and though consumption is generally not criticized much, though i doubt that over 50 percent are for the complete legalization...

if the statistic is accurate though, it is only a matter of time until it will be legalized and taxed in california.

I pondered that too but then have you ever read the power of myth? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Power_of_Myth : We have lived with the Anslinger's "Monster Marijuana" and now it's changing in our favor IMO.

I like the forward momentum.

Be well!

If its gonna happen its gonna be in Cali first.
I saw Arnold S.on TV the other day and he was saying he was ready to hear debates on the pros and cons.
Its a step in the right direction.

California has always been a trailblazer of legal precedent. I know budget deficits are terrible, but maybe there is a super silver haze lining after all?

Hello all,

I think it means it is dead at the moment.

PS. I am not sure we need more regulation.

Also, if regulated, whos to keep a person from growing their own without the tax stamp and big brotehr watching.

As far as home brewed alcohol, there are restrictions on the amount in a given year/household.

The thing that makes making beer less attractive to brew due the process/materials/space/time to name a few. Not to mention the amount of man hours devoted.

However, just throw a few seeds in the ground and water and sun and poof! My point being the relative ease of growing your own.

While some of us here may consider it as easy as throwing a seed in the ground, I still think a majority of smokers would just want to buy their own due to the time investment necessary. With legalization, I have to assume some big business will pick up the MJ industry.

Here's my vision. Big business is producing loads of commercial grade while the few connoisseurs are left to grow their own varieties of exotic high grade cannabis. Then you will have the smaller "mom and pop" businesses growing special varieties that are still available, just not as massively produced. In the end the availability of cannabis will make it less worthwhile to grow your own unless you actually enjoy it...

So for the majority of smokers, I can only imagine they would rather walk down to the corner mart and pick up a sack instead of waiting 2+ months for that first harvest. A lot like the alcohol industry now and people that brew their own...

Either way I say rock on decriminalization and legalization. No one should be in jail for this plant...

Cheers,
