it sounded like a fuse blowing to me, but everything's working still. i shut it off as a precaution but the light is fine. never heard a sound like that from grow equipment, should i be worried about this?

metal and plastics sometimes make a cracking type sound when they get cold/warm, because the difference in cold/warm causes them to stretch. This can sometimes cause all sorts of weird popping and cracking sounds (ever notice how baseboard heaters make clicking sounds? Same principle).
if it still works fine and there is no smoke coming from it, and there is no discoloration, i would assume it's fine. Don't take my word for it though!

I guess that's possible but it's never done it before.. I'm keeping an eye on it though and every smell thats a little off sends me running to the back room to check on it. I'm fucking paranoid today.

The light attached to this ballast died yesterday. I'm pretty sure that's what the popping sound was as well as the cause for the odd buzzing the ballast made once this happened until the light died. Replaced the bulb, everything is back to normal.
