Lighting: ZigZag/checkerboard pattern?

I've heard a couple people mention using a type of zigzag pattern with their lighting; on a flip or somehow...

Would some of you explain this in depth? Benefits, how it works, etc..

toohighmf is using the flip in a checkerboard fashion..and then flipping that. It really opens the mind to the possibilities out there.

checkerboard flip flips ever 2 hours for 6 flips in his 12/12 photoperiod....ofcourse then he flips that to do an entire 'nother room.
