Pretty new to smoking weed and it seems like everytime my buddies pick up bud they always rave about how dank it is. I know that the usual signs of weed being dank is a strong smell, leafy, colorful (preferably orange), and crystally. Are their any others signs that will indicate that the weed is real dank???? Also, go into the details of the above descriptions that indicate weed is dank or not.

I am a flavor smoker so i judge dankness off of flavor. Pinesol sour grapefruit fuel is what you are looking for.

heehee...couldn't resist :D

OK, dankity dank usually smells good, tastes good. I like some nice green buds myself that reek like a skunk run over in the road. Look for tons of resin, sticky to the touch.

If it gets you high, it is good bud.

Color is irrelevant to quality, but it sure looks cool, and there's some very nice varieties that have a natural purple shade, but purple can also be caused by cold temperatures late in flowering.

Dankness is all relative anyway, the best weed you've ever smoked with always be dank, even if it can't make it's way into another smokers bowl. After years of smoking, you may find that what others think is the bomb is plane jane to you, or maybe just not your cup of tea. Some people get hooked on a particular flavor while others go for a specific mental effect.

As far as what you can tell by a bud without smoking it, does it look well taken care of or compressed and beaten up? Does have a lot of crystals (trichomes/resin glands) on it? They are the part that gets you high after all, but some frosty buds can be less potent, so that's not always a solid indicator.

You really can't tell until you smoke it, but the thing I look at is maturity, which can be tougher to tell. I look at the calyxes (the green teardrop shaped structures that make up the buds), if these look swollen and plump, chances are the grower let the buds mature fully which will lead to a higher THC content. If the calyxes look tiny with little sparse crystals, chances are the grower chopped too fast to make a quick buck and the pot will have a short lived, unimpressive high.

That being said, there are plump frosty indicas out there with bland stones. And there are sparse stringy sativas with tiny resin glands that will make you think you're tripping. So the best way to tell is to smoke it.

And if you're buddies are also rookie smokers, they probably got no clue either, they just wanna sound like players. Like you will when you start throwing around words like calyx and trichome.

Take a bud, throw it up against the wall, if it sticks its DANK, if it don't its not.

Then again.... that may be how you tell if spaghetti is done.

dam dude thanks for all the help. So I know the trichromes are the crystals, but I still dont understand the calyx. The teardrop shaped leaves?? So its just another word for the leaves that contain the trichromes?

Not really, the calyx isn't made up of leaf material. look at this thread, for a good example.

Look at the first picture of the thread. It gives in good detail, what the calyx looks like on a plant when grown to maturity. The calyx's are the bubbly looking things forming the bud structure on the plant.

Though when the plant is harvaested, dried, and cured, the plant loses allot of its weight and structure size, thus the the calyx's shrink.

Here's a thread of dried and cured bud, you can see now how the calyx's look when the bud's are dried and cured. Various strains have different bud structures.

you guys are saying leaves, and bubbly looking things. That has got to confuse him. Check it out.

They are pods. Seed pods. Little hollow tear drop shaped pods with two hairs coming out of it.

There are stems that hold up the bud, leaves that gather photosynthesis, pods that grow the seed, hairs that catch pollen to fertilize the pod, and resin glands (trichomes). That is all a bud consists of.
