how long to veg

S

i currently have ten seedlings:woohoo: that are five days old in a mix of FFOF, light warrior, fox farms planting mix, a brick of coco coir, and half a bag of perilite. the strains are eight caramel kush seedling and two Guido kush seedlings. There under a 1000w mh bulb that ill use for both flower and veg in my silver edition hydro hut. OK so there's the details so here my question so i veg longer or throw them into flower now(any pros or cons?) i don't want monster plants, but i would like to get a decent yield which is kinda hard to tell what ill get since there all from seed. thanks for any input lates silky

You need a few different fixtures bro, wasting all that light on seedlings isnt good for you or them.It hard for me to give an idea of how long to veg being I do things a bit differently, but I can tell you as an obvious rule the longer you veg the bigger your harvest will be.So many other factors though. Are they in small 4 inch containers now or in larger pots?Planting a seedling directly into a larger pot is going to waste soil and result in a smaller yield in the end.I usually go from tube flo's to a 800W combo for veg using just the 400MH at first. Then they get spread between the 800 combo and 1K MH to finishing vegging in 2 gal pots. Then I take cuts, transplant to 3 gal,and off to the flower room they go

i have them in 2 gallon pots why would it result in a smaller yield staring out in that pot? and i have the 1000w 5 ft above them so i don't burn them up.

When you start a seedling with an HID pretty high above the plant,it normally results in a stretched gangly plant, not a short bushy plant like you want. You can literally have the tube floro's 1/4 inch above the tops for the first 7-10 days and give them a hell of a start in life. When you have a container grow its most important to use all the media available in the pot. When you plant in a larger container the plants roots tend to grow downward along the sides of the pot and swirling at the bottom leaving a huge"big empty" in the middle of the container. All this soil is wasted and wont be able to be utilized. When you start a seedling or cut in a smaller 4 inch pot the rootball has a tendency to fill the container using all the available media. Then you transplant up a size and the same process occurs.I did a lot of messing around with this in my earlier years and I'm telling you indoor grows and growing in mother earth has little in common.Of course there is the small footprint with several plants in smaller pots as opposed to the same in 1 or 2 gal pots.I'm not saying 1 gal nursery size is to large to start out in,but I wouldnt.2 gal or bigger is just nuts to start a baby in

What he said.

Also, with only 10 seedlings and a 1000w light I would either start some more seeds, or plan on vegging a long time (2+months). You can fit 6 pretty big plants under a 1000w HID.

My last two grows of blockhead I had 21 plants each with 3 1K HPS and got 5 pounds give or take an ounce each time.I know I could have got 6 lbs with 24 plants(8 plants per fixture instead of 7)and stayed under the 25 plant limit down here.I do use vertizontals though which are 4 ft octagonal parabolics they have a wider spread I believe than most aircooled fixtures.Dont try this at home wothout co2 enrichment lol

Hahahahah so far I fail at growing this is my third run and I've never been able to get over a seven oz dried and that was two monsters in dwc buckets but I think I like soil for taste anyways I have more questions should I replant them in smaller containers? And I also have two floros ons a seventy watt and ones a thirty five watt should I throw them under the flors aswell thanks again for the help

how much room do you have? in general, a good rule to follow is plan for the plants to triple in length from the time they 1st went into the flower room. doubling is more the norm but many do go taller so it's best to plan for it. other than that, i personally like to wait at least until they're sexually mature...preflowers are usually showing and alternating branching is well underway. or about 8 to 10 weeks after germinating.

good luck

I'm currently in a four by four hut that's in the middle of an empty room I could use the room or closet which I may do but I use the hut for light issuses and it keeps stuff clean but it does get pretty hot like eighty two degrees usually so I may re think my plans

Assuming you have your environment under control you should be shooting for 1lb+ in soil. I think you are going to have better luck keeping your plants under the 1000w lamp than putting them under smaller flouro fixtures, but I'm not sure. I put seedlings pretty close to a 400w HID without problems.

anyways I have more questions should I replant them in smaller containers?

If they are only 5 days old I would try to move them to a sensibly sized pot. Just try with 1 and see if you can move it to a 1-quart (or 1-pint) container (or cup) without disrupting the roots too much. If you leave them in the 2-gallon pots then will be rootbound in the big pots long before they would be rootbound in the same size pots if you progressively transplanted (16oz->.75gallon-> 2-gallons) and you will eventually end up with small plants for the amount of dirt and floor space you are using. They will also be harder to water correctly as the water will tend to sit in the part of the soil not colonized by the roots.

hi bud , yea burning a 1K over seedlin it;s no nesecerry , i start off @ 20W aquarium flourescents for seedlings+clones . 200W enviro{energy saver type bulb } for veg once out of the prop . waiting till after there @ least a month old before goin under my 600 . hoping u hone ur technique , when using the pot up method u cag use diff soil/compost for different stages of plant life / starting off with seedling moving onto stronger compost as u grow . best thing would b sex a feamale u like an clone her and veg for 2/3 months , basically ur flowering time . not sure about a transplant but if u do b carefull

I thought about thisi and I'm pretty sure you can do it with minimum disruptions. I've had a couple stoner moments when I've planted two seeds in the same cup and managed to separate them when they were young without causing any harm.

Check out the thread "one whopping big grow". He planted the seeds straight into 2 gal pots and had great results. I germinate seeds in small rockwool cubes and transplant them into 4x4x4 inch pots and then into 3 gal pots way before they even get a little bit rootbound...this way they have no stress at all from transplanting...but this is my first grow in 9 years and I'm only on day 15 so I guess I don't have much experience.
goodluck, peace
