starting new micro grow, got a few questions...

I have been lurking around here for quite some time and am amazed at the amount of knowledge around here. Im pretty newb to this micro scene. My first grow was outdoors. On to the goodies...So I have this nightstand, which is in the process of being turned into a stealthy micro grow. It will still be serving its purpose as a nightstand as well, but is waaay more useful as a grow box. The box is 1' 3''L x 1'7"W X 2' 2"H. I think that should be just a little less than 2 sq ft.

Lighting is going to be CFL for space and heat limitations. Im running 4 27W CFLs two 6500K and two 2700K. That gives me around 108 watts and 7200 lumens. is that decent for the size im dealing with??

Circulation will most likely be done with pc fans. 120mm 50cfm for exhaust, BUT i have to use a diy scrubber as well. Will I need a bigger fan? Maybe 2 exhausts?? Intake is four one inch passive intakes as of now...the main problem is that since it still has to function as a night stand, it must be quiet. Otherwise the girlfriend says it goes...

I like the idea of auto flowering strains(hindu kush) , but im looking at Nirvana Blue Mystic and NL. Any ideas on what strains would be good for my size. Im open to all LST, SCROG, and if possible SOG.

Hey there.

I think you should increase your intakes. Rule of thumb for passive intakes
is exhaust size x 2.

About the sound... I would try to find a silent fan, but still moving a lot of air. Mount it in such a way no vibration occurs. I would also make the carbon scrubber work by getting blown through. That could make it work like a "silencer".

Thanks for replying. Thats a lot of intake, but it makes sense.

I have always heard that it is better to pull than to push, but maybe youre right, and it would be better for my situation.

Yeah, pulling is standard, but its still just a matter of getting the "dirty" air through the carbon.

Micro-growing.. It's a different approach. It's new ideas.

Note that four 1 inch holes do NOT a 4 inch hole make. While the illo uses nine holes, the principle is the same.



A 1 inch hole = .785 si.
A 4 inch hole = 12.56 si.
Because you want double the intake (25.12 si), it would take thirty two 1 inch holes. Do yourself a favor, get a 4 inch hole saw and punch three holes. One at the top for exhaust fan and two passive intakes below.

Thanks freezerboy. I didnt look at it that way before. I just figured 4 one inch holes was the same. How about the lighting? it is sufficient? Also I was thinking about ditching one of the 6500K and throwing in another 2700K, to make it 1 6500K and 3 2700K since I will more than likely doing an AF or 12/12 bc of my lack of size. Any thoughts?

I'm not saying you can not grow with the light you have but...
The plant(s) would really enjoy some more light. =) Maybe keep both 6500k's
and add 2 2700k's... If you can keep it cool that is. If you dont want to add another exhaust fan, maybe it would work with a glass shield below the bulbs?
