The clean up - When do you do it?

I'm in the 3rd week of my flower cycle, and this will be the first crop I've done on my own. I'm just curious at which week do you guys clean up all the lower branches and popcorn style growth (if at all).

I like to do the majority of it 1 week before I flower while still in veg.. That allows them to recover from the stress for about a week.

Then up until the second week of flower I minor trimming. I don't think its recommended to trim anything once your buds are about the size of a pencil erazor. Its too much stress for them. I usually see these within the first two weeks of flower so you MAY have missed that point, in which case do it next time...

A search will yield some good results for you, check it out!

Thanks man. I have definitely noticed in the past few days the small growth at the base of the plants has exploded.... :( what a waste.

Ill tell you what I do is trim em now I trim mine all the way to week 5 and they just keep packin it on . I try to trim up all the little shit once little buds start then you can see what will be worthy and the ones you may question if theyll be worthy take them ones off as well trust me there will be no ill effect my major trim is usually weeks 2-3 go look in my thread tell me if they look like they were stressed, no. trim the shit out of them now.

I try not to do any substantial trimming after the 2nd week of flowering. Plants spend to much energy trying to heal rather than flower IMO.

I go by a few rules,

In veg, if it looks like its taking more energy than its giving, remove it, so if its not in much light and stretching like crazy for the light, remove it, or if its small and spindly and not in much light.

Also pruning earlier than later focus's the energy to the branches you actually want, if you have loads of small branches they will all be smaller than if you have a few branches, you just need to find that balance between taking to much off and leaving the plant bare and unable to get energy and leaving so much that the energy is so spread that you just get a lot of mediocre branches that you then take off when cleaning up for popcorn later

In flower remove everything that will be popcorn and same rules as above...

I like to trim off the most shaded low or spindly branches just before flower, say 5 days, i dont like to trim to much here unless the plant is to bush like, as if its getting good light it contributing to the plants energy reserves.

Then i give them a good clean up in week one as they start to stretch a bit, removing everything that will be popcorn, minimum the bottom 1/3 of branches and alot of side branching from the main branches, i find you need to be harder than you want to be here.

Then through to the 3rd week i prune off anything that looks like its still going to be popcorn etc.

Hope that rant made sense

As do I, after 2-3 weeks I leave em alone. But I've noticed a nice increase in yield after stripping leaves and small flowers from the bottom of the branches.

Man, I am constantly trimming because realhigh showed me that trimming out your plant gives you much better bud yield. Made a believer out of me. Now I look to fork the meristem (to get four 1st node branches) and run those out like a rotisserie turned so the tines poke up in the air. Then the battle really begins.

hey man. You do whatever works for you. It's a great plant and the odds are small that a harvest will go totally south.

Thanks for the tips guys. Some OG's (old growers) were telling me that if I want the max yield to not trim anything. But I think they think I'm planning to smoke it all :noway:

What I want is decently sized buds. I think I'll do a big trim right now and maybe just pluck off the smaller stuff later. I'm growing PurpleKush, so the buds never get enormous anyways.

On big plants, 4-6 ft, you can trim anytime, and the small buds are perfect for adding moisture to over dry herb in the jar. I dry them too much, jar em, then add a bud back to replace the moisture from exactly the same source, so there is no flavor change.

Up to 2 week of flower for major trimming, up to week 4 for minor trimming..

Trimming the lower branches makes a huge impact on final yeild in the positive way. popcorn buds are less potent, less fun to trim, and get you less high..

Why would you keep them? Chop dat shit off ! Your final wieghts will be increased and less work at harvest time.
