micro carbon scrubber

I went to Wally word this weekend and built this filter. Is anyone using this effectively in a LifeLess-style Rubbermaid tub? I lit a match in my cab and could smell a little bit of the sulfur through the filter. I also need a stronger fan as I think this scrubber is restricting airflow a little too much for my 90mm PC fan. Thinking about getting a Suncourt style 4"-inline duct fan. Going to start flowering 2x headband and 2x hindu skunks once I get this figured out. Any advice/suggestions are appreciated! :woohoo:

hi i'm new :)
I have built this filter whit "extruded activated carbon for freshwater and marine water filtration" and i have a question....

is safe to breathe the air that leaves the filter?
I ask this because it is mounted in the room where I sleep.
thanks :)

yes it is safe to breath the filtered air. if anything it would be cleaner than the air that went in.

well I am not sure what the life-less rubbermaid setup is, but it sounds like your grow, with four stinky strains is more than micro in nature... as such you would probably want to increase the size of the filter.

Yea anything more than micro is a little much IMO for this one. If you want to cool a Rubbermaid setup, or similar, you'll need more juice. I built a small scale filter for my current Rubbermaid, and future cab. I posted up in the Home Made Filter Club if ya want to check it oot.

Hey ! Can you guys help me out. When you say 3" and 4" net pots, so like whats the diameters of a 3" and a 4" pot? And what do you think if im gonna have one 90mm and one 80mm pc fans for intake and two 80mm pc fans with the micro scrubbers for exhaust in my micro grow?

3" and 4" net pots are 3 inch and 4 inch in diameter.

I would never use active intakes in a setup... by active intake I mean fans blowing into ur grow area. in other words you only have fans pulling the air out of the grow space. this creates a negative pressure inside the grow space insuring stinky air doesn't escape through any cracks .... instead air is pulled in from the intakes and any cracks and out the exhaust through the filter treating the smell.

as for number and size of fans... I can't say without knowing what the ambient temps are and what type and wattage of lamps you are using.

Hey Suga, great to see you back! You're microsrubber is still going strong.

Are you are growing or still on a break?

Okok, im not from the us , so not familiar with inches :). But if you would have three 80mm and one 90mm fans how would you hook them up to get the best odor control? And btw i have four 2700k, 15W lamps, and gonna buy two 4000k , 30W lamps when ill start flowering. And the space im using is a mid tower pc case

Micro carbon scrubber

This design is adapted from a larger design built by Haps that uses a big net pot and a milk crate for full room odor control. This one is designed to work with computer fans and is intended for micro grows.

Materials;

Carbon - you don't need much.
3" net pot
4" net pot
hot air register filters or some other filter like material (edit: pantyhose is a great option here that people have actually found to be superior - a pair of the type found in those plastic eggs/balls is adequate for one scrubber and should run less than a dollar)
duct tape (but of course!)

So here we go.

Tape a couple of pieces of filter over the outside of the 4" net pot. (edit: or just stretch the pantyhose over the net pot.)

Here it is done.

edit: this step can be accomplished using pantyhose instead and may in fact be easier and provide better airflow - this is what i happened to have laying around at the time.

Now add a layer of carbon into the bottom - maybe 1/4" deep.

Now add filter to the inside of your 3" net pot.

I did this in a rush and I have a tendency to just throw things together, I am sure this could be done more carefully but this is what I did.

So now we put the 3" in the 4" and add carbon a little at a time between the 3" and the 4". Pressing down and shaking it occasionally will ensure fill is good and even.

Now we tape the gap.

Here it is done. Again I'm sure people can do this and make it nicer.

So now I tape it to my intake on this pci slot fan which I like for exhausting micro grow spaces.

Now we are done. Air flow is still very good.

I built this for a drying box and it kept the smell under control - considering I had about 3+oz dry of stinky buds in there I feel it should work well for the micro grower.

I'm going to give it a run in a few weeks when I need to flower a plant in the cab I usually veg in.

So I challenge you micro growers out there to try this design out and tell me what you think. It is meant to be cheap and easy to assemble and should not only cut down odor but works as a light trap.

edit: so what do you do if you don't have a set of net pots and/or easy access to a hydro store - well you look for something else to use instead at a place you probably do have access to - a walmart - and here's what bongasaurus did with some black wire mesh pencil holders like this

and construct using the same principals (big thanks to bongasaurus for the great add on DIY w/pics  )....

would a 120mm PC fan with 800 RPM be able to pull enough air to go thru this beautifull design? If not would one with 1200 RPM could do it?:hotbounce

D.I.trY, That was exactly what I was thinking of putting together! How thick is the layer of carbon? And do you use the Noctua fan at 12v?
Great craftsmanship btw !!

Hi T.J. the carbon is about 2.5cm wide but i didnt get out a ruler! The fan runs normally at 9V which i find gives ample airflow but i have an adjustable DC adapter and in summer ill have it on 12v. Its almost silent I love that fan- but you MUST buy the silica gel fan strips if you want to achieve this. I got pretty demoralised with the noise until i tried them.

I attached the first piece of extruded steel on the inside of U but do it on the outside edge because its bloody easier! Oh and thanks for the compliment- if i couldnt share it here id be wishing if only i could show it to somebody

Slightly Larger than sugabear's scrubber but still micro, sort of ;)

Inspired by simplicity I see a fun Saturday Morning Project awaiting me, thanks sb :respect:

My cab is 600w hps and I get 6 gals in there and when the ultra sonja is stinking my front yard out I sometimes think of how cool it would be to have one of those newfangled scrubbers but then I return from my dreamy reverie to reality as I scoop out another handful of the most disgusting smelling compost to spread around in my garden, in the hopes that if the man do sniff my garage it's only nosefuls of garden stink he's detecting hehe

Has worked many years now :joint:

But then I see this thread and give it a whirl.

My exhaust is 14cm diameter so I'll need something bigger than a cup holder, how about a cheap wire trash can, like in your office? Hmmmmm.....

Considered going the pantyhose and charcoal route but decided to try this carbon sheeting out and boost it up with carbon pellets and hose if necessary

the inner bin needs ventilation

mark it with a pen, holepunch it to make drilling easier, drill small hole first then increase until we can breath

snip the rim of the outer bin off so I can use the mesh to fold over and secure everything together

Will just use duct tape to secure it to outside outlet of the exhaust fan, or maybe a large plastic garden pot I can butcher up and secure to this, then tape that to the exhaust fan.

Didn't take more than an hour, including shopping for the bits, which cost...

- 2 x bins = $3.75
- 2 x carbon sheet = $25

I love this website, thanks to all contributors offfff ideas knowledge and wisdom, and to the youngsters for their enthusiasm hehe

how did the DIY scrubber work for you? Do you think it would clear a 4x4 tent? Also, what kind of fan did you use?
