DWC for Mother plant?

Got a question, I'm growing out some seeds and am hoping they'll be mother plants.
After cloning I'll be growing those clones in a net pot 5 gal DWC, but I wanted to know if I should grow the mothers that way too.
Or maybe I should do the ebb/flow for Mothers?
I of course want heathy Mom plants but this will be a small grow (4 net pots) so I dont want my moms to grow too fast.
I have all the equipment to do both but I want it simple.
Any thoughts?

btw, happy 420! :joint:

hey sloppy.....i'm in a similar situation and what i do is 2 fold.....

i have a momma in a small 3 gal DWC bubbler, but use only plain water, and trim her roots once a month or so....she stays at a nice size for yanking clones, but not out of control

secondly......soil. my momma's in soil do the say....produce enough clones, but not outta control growth. i feed them mainly plain water, with the weekly dose of gentle nutes.

whatcha think ?

Sounds simple enough, I'll try the smaller 3 gal net pot thang' for the momma then once the clones been sexed I'll put them in the 5gal ones.

Thanks for your reply.

especially for mother plants i wouldnt use a dwc!
with a mother plant you try to maintain a good genetic and if your power supply fails once you pretty much can say goodbye to your moms!
i wouldnt use a topfeedsystem either because if your drippers clog, which happens a lot in my system, the plants can die within 3 days.

i would use a ebb/flow system with hydro corrells ... most unlikely to rot and reliable!

anyways the difference between a normal hydro system and a dwc is not that big that the earn out of it is big enough to justify the risk

dwc is great for moms.

mr jones, you wouldnt use dwc because of fear of a power failure? then why use dwc under any circumstances, let alone for mom?

I guess maybe just have 1 mom in dirt for back up if you're that worried about it?

I guess you make a point but I will say this: DWC provides growth rates that can easily be argued to be superior, and makes for excellent moms. As long as you have your situation under control, what is there to fear besides that which is naturally and always will be outside of your control? (such as weather etc)

Thank you Two12s and Mr. Jones for your reply!
I will of course listen to all ideas about this and make my best guess.
Anyone else have a comment?

Be cool.:joint:

Hey Sloppy, I was wondering the same myself. I grow my ladies in a wilma dripper system but now that I have just built a seperate vegging room I have a few fem seeds that I want to pop and turn into mothers.
I've had a look at a 1 pot dripper system for them but that is expensive and a lot of farting about.
What I intend to do is buy the biggest freakin pots i can find and grow them in compost.
Mud for me mate:joint:

All my 'Keeper' mums are in 7oz plastic cups of soil. Bonsai style. They all have at least 12-24 sites to take cuttings from since they're less than 6 months old.(and how I treat them)

They look like shit. I abuse the hell out of them, except when I need cuttings.
If I need a bunch of cuttings I'll throw one into hydro for a few weeks and make another mum out of it. I water every 2-3 days. (bottom up)

They stay alive just fine without any dangers of dying on me. :D

I only flower in hydro though. LOL Just soooo easy and quick, I can't see why I'd do anything else unless forced to.:yoinks:

Thanks Mark and Hydro-soil!
I haven't had too much luck on the growing front, lookin' to change that now.
Hopefully Obama will kick LEO off our back and we can overgrow the world.
I'll keep checkin' in. be cool.

Kal-El

I keep moms in hydro.
The key is a smaller light to keep the growth under control.
I use a 125watt light for the moms.

Thanks Kal-El, I placed my sprouts in a 3.5 gal buckets last night, using a 5 inch net pot with lava rocks and two airstones each.
Haven't added ant nutes yet as thats where I've failed in the past...that and it being very dry in the area.
Each sprout is about 2 inches tall now and are in small rockwool cubes, so far so good!
I have some PBP grow and liquid Karma ready to add the the R/O water, I'll keep an eye on it add when it looks like they need it.
Keep your fingers crossed! be cool
