Met a chill cat last night, about 20 something years old. Anywho, he told me that he spent a year in jail needlessly for getting caught with a pipe, a bowl of weed, with the tiniest bit of already smoked opium on top. The cops tested the bowl and it came up marijuana/opiates...He didn't have any priors and this was in the Northwest of the US...wow

anybody else know of shit happening like that?

kind of a wake up call for me,
that is just freakin unbelievable,
Is it really true that the state prisons are run by private companies with stock on NYSE? Does this mean that the companies make more money by incarcerating more inmates?:fsu:

Yes very true my son has stock in Wackenhut and the CEO was recently charged for MURDER of a guy in prison. Google it.....but lots of money investing in prisons OR his broker would not be doing it.

The way i understand it privately owned jails are given 40,000 per year per inmate. So they go ahead and spend 20-30k on each inmate and then 10-20k is pure profit for the guys up top. I am sure there are other ways they make money off it to i just remember seeing that on a documentary.

You got it the private jails are being sued for prisoner death etc and the state don't want to deal with lawsuits because the inmates ARE ALWAYS SUING.

So Wachenhut takes the risk and pays the lawsuit aND STILL MAKE MONEY...win win for them. They contract out the medical and food service mostly these days also.
BIG MONEY!!!

if one does not work while they are in jail. they will owe money when they leave..

step back a minute...when you give the prisons and police incentive(profit money) to put people in jail...are over crowded prisons any surprise?

that is just straight wrong. I'm for police and a prison system but come on. State owned and run. Less people. more diversion. prison creates more criminals...it's a constant cycle :joint:...could not ever invest in something like that.

As long as incarceration is a for profit industry things like this will happen. I recently read about 2 girls who got into a petty fight that were sent to a for profit prison for 11 months, and it later came out that the judge who sentanced them was recieving contributions from the company that owned the facility they were sent to. These scumbag companies like "non-violent" offenders whom they can force to do slave labor as opposed to violent offenders that will tell them to fuck off, working phone banks and small assembly in some cases and in others making them do road construction and maintenance for the whopping sum of $.18 an hour. These companies like GEO Group (formerly wackenhut) CCA and the Cornell Company are falling out of favor as it is being shown that outsourcing is not as cost effective as once thought. There are also numerous cases of abuse by the guards physical as well as sexual against the inmates. It really sucks these poor kids instead of getting leniancy on a first offense instead get sent off to these companies.

Thanks

I saw something on the news about a kid going to jail and the judge making money, but it was a boy. Even with local courts, they do make some money from fines and court costs but not much. They make more showing a need for a huge budget, so busts help get state and federal funds. I have never looked into private prisons much, but I have to say that what you all know makes some sense.

It was never the land of the free, but some have tried. I guess some Indians had it pretty good and other have had it pretty darn ruff. I wonder if the economy in the states goes for a nose dive what kind of armed rebellions would surface. People get sick of getting walked all over and even the truth that they speak not getting a fair hearing.

The state wants to outsource the prisons. Managing them and the lawsuits from inmates is a PIA...pain in the ass.....I worked in corrections so I heard all the Admin talk about it. Eventually it will all mostly be outsourced just like all other government business is being done now. It is all about THE MONEY!!!!!!

Thanks, I'm on the same page now.

I'm little older than most here, however, I have two sons in college and they along with their friends awlays seem to keep current on all the new slang terminology, but "DOOD" is a new one to me.

Didn't you know that the prisons were full of innocent people man ?

Seriously though....I like all the facts before I pass judgement.....If I can't have those, I fall back on "Believe half of what you see and nothing that you read/hear"

Vanguard is another private-prison investment that's traded publicly. My sister wants to throw our family inheritance in Vanguard but I don't want a thing to do with for-profit incarceration.

BUT it is making money. Usually you invest to make MONEY not lose money.
You invest in a thriving business. Incarceration is a thriving recession proof business investment. unfortunately....but reality!

Yep, I could invest with Exxon, Halliburton, Blackwater and Goldman Sachs but I don't. I always invest to make money, no usually about it.
