I turned off my TV 5 years ago. Haven't looked back since. It really is malignant, as you say... a negative force. Commercials...political debates...the fakeness is everywhere.
When I wake up , the tv goes on, and stays on until I go back to sleep. I like to study the trends of the opinions they are feeding the population. If you watch the trends, then you can see the strategy. It's handy to know what's going on and you need to watch the trends to work that out.
TV just like any other form of passive entertainment (like reading a book)
is supposed to tickle the senses to some degree, it is what you make of
it. I used to enjoy reading immensely until my vision started to fail me, and
recently a small blind spot has developed in my left eye (my only good eye
btw) hampering my reading even more.
I own a huge DVD collection and I enjoy the ever lovin' shit out of my TV.
I read, I go to the cineplexes, the theater, and I watch television as well. I listen to music, I write, and I believe I have somewhat eclectic and diverse tastes.
Television cannot just "make" you an idiot. Chances are, you're already an idiot already before the television.
Shows that come on regularly that I watch are mostly on Showtime or HBO. I still watch other shows that I don't necessarily keep up with, like Scrubs or King of Queens..etc. And then, like everyone else who wants to say they watch television but try to sound like they only watch it for educational purposes, I sometimes watch the History channel, NGEO, and the Discovery channel.
It's just television. It doesn't "rot" your brain. If you watch shit like Flavor of Love or Larry the Cable Guy movies, chances are your brain is already rotten.
