Hi all.

I am pretty new to the forum style of learning, but have decided to check it out due to my recent completion of a master's thesis on this type of education. From what I have seen so far it looks like I am in good hands.

I recently completed a horticulture master's program at a respectable university and have also been experimenting with indoor gardening for a few years. With a wealth of information at my fingertips everyday, I still must say that I depend much on peoples opinions and personal experiences, as plants have such unique and variable characteristics.

I am currently running a coco coir (more finely ground)/bag system with some pretty high wattage hps/mh lights. I have found much success with this system and also found that this is much more forgiving and easier to work with than my previous rockwool drip system.

I would like to start out by posing a question for some advice on my personal system. I use 1 gal. bags that are circular and taller than they are wide filled with the granular coco. They sit on a table that drains to a reservoir that I have just been using for waste with hand watering. I have all the pumps, timers, etc. for a drip system, but was wondering if anyone has done it with a medium that holds water as much as coco? For example, should I allow the medium to almost fully dry before I run the system, or keep it more moist? If I do it the first way, I'm not seeing as high of a percentage of runoff back into my reservoir and I would think there may be more salts washing into it or something? I have only worked with this system with rockwool before where I had it running at least a couple times a day...seems like that would keep the coco way too wet ya know?

Anyway, i'm excited to be on here and consider myself a pacifistical fighter for the good cause ;) I hope to share much knowledge and gain lots of practical experiences!

What's up PolioJoe, welcome to the forums bro! I would post a thread in the coco forum to get your question answered better. If you use the search feature at the top of the screen, you can find other threads on coco drip systems. I know you do not let the medium dry out, and most people run their drippers multiple times a day for best results. Hope this helps.

Welcome PJ,

As OS said, better to put your Q in the Coco forum, but to answer it, I would say look at Canna's advice and try 5x day watering schedule if you have a timer setup, I prefer using plain 4mm pipe to drippers ...... the same thing, just without the labyrinth bit that regulates and blocks up every now and then.

Welcome, I have a masters degree as well (not in horticulture). I like how you try to sound as incredibly intelligent as possible in your post...RELAX! This is a very laid back place, leave the compound sentence structure at school; you are trying too hard!

Anyway, to answer your question, I would let the medium try out in between waterings. It's a similar concept to the ebb and grow system, where the medium dries out in between feedings to promote root growth. Good luck with your continued journey to "gain a wealth of info."

Lots of advanced degrees here as some have privately communicated to me. I have an MSN myself from University of Tampa a great liberal arts school also. Did not finish my masters till I was 56 though and had to retire soon after per disability. But education and advanced education empowers you so much. The GRE's were a biotch. My dughter actually did her thesis on MMJ and the intolerance for the movement in todays medicine.

She will be sitting soon for her ARNP exam......

But we need educated and enlightened ppl in this movement.....
Good luck in your career and growing weed and spreading the word of how it is really a good herbal med used for 1000's of years.
