Hey again SF, well i do have a car but im selling it... for what i read and heard having a car in Nl is a very expensive, i will take my old bicycle ^^

My plans arent going so well because im having some big probs but... i will keep in contact (hoping to have good news), but mean time im still in my crapy country.

spend a week in the Netherlands after the cup to assess current reality,
and hopefully will confirm that it is more or less realistic

Í will still move there no matter, what I just want to work out the best

Hi SF,

What you say sounds sensible, and it is, but I think you need to be realistic and accept that (especially with your low tolerance) that you're going to be so wasted later this month in NL, that you won't be able to see the cold hard reality.

That's ok if you've got loads of money, as you can just do what you want when you want, but if you're a normal guy like you sound, you should just make the decision to move or not, as in this case you're gonna be too f*cked to know what's going on most of the time!

I'm coming to the cup too, and I'm sure we'll meet up at some point and have a joint together!

Well after going to the cup, what The British Bulldog posted is what
actually happened, I was simply too fuc*ed up the whole time to objectively
observe the reality around me.

But I did find out what I wanted to know, and had a great time smoking some
amazing herb, hash and extracts!

met many cool people, and had a blast! Definately hard the first time,
because it wasn't as organized this year, and next year since I will be living
there already it will be much easier to party with more people since I will
know how to organize everything much more effectively

I did what you're planning to do just 2-3 weeks ago with my girlfriend. Financially we got 3 months to get a steady income coming. Getting a place is easy if you got the cash. We got our apartment from some company and we needed to pay 1 month rent as "service fee" to them, but it was so simple. The guy renting the place said that he don't want to rent it at first because we don't have a job yet, but after promising we'd pay 3 months in advance, the guy was practically begging us to move.

I heard that Dutch people are bit greedy when it comes to money?

You can get a apartment in Amsterdam where you just pay month in a time, but it's expensive. 900e per month for really small crib, even though it was in heart of Amsterdam, wasn't a good deal for us.

And yea, when your visiting Amsterdam and "smoking all you possibly can", you really don't get the true perspective, you're just in your hazy la-la land. But trust your instincts, dutch people are great and The Netherlands is really unique country.

Even if all fails, it's just life, atleast you spent some time in this great country.

"what is the best way to find a good paying job after arrival?"

"where is the cheapest place to live?"

Since I only speak English and my native language, maybe it will be tough to
get a job in the other areas of the Netherlands...

...but still, from what I read so far, employment agencies seems to be the
fastest way to find work.

...as far as rent there are many places that offer really low rent, but they
are not that close to Amsterdam. But I figured if I could find work there
that would be much better, since the wages are not that high in Amsterdam
but the rent and all the other expenses are.

I reside in Haarlem, beautiful city, wouldnt move to Amsterdam for shit ..
Truth of the matter is if you wanna make it your gonna make it..
Im from Cali and I made it .. I use to work at Barneys coffee shop and its because i know people ..
But you could get a job at one of the commercial ones like bulldog that are only in it for the money .
But one were its really deep in the scene "underground scene" but still commercial like Barneys its difficult to get into to.

And about dude talking about Amnesia Haze from Willy Wortel .. wouldnt waste my time .. you must smoke mids .. dont mean this in a bad way .. you want some good amnesia Haze with consistancy is at Barneys ..
but for Sativas theyve got only the best on the menu . g13 amnesia haze, utopia haze and so on .. but i couldnt believe someone mentioned Willy Wortel .. is a lousy shop

been reading through your thread and see what your aiming for and would like to add my bit. Presently Holland is suffering from the economic decline and unemployment is rising very quickly. I've been here 12 years and started off living in a tent, then got a job in a small factory in a village, which I done for 2 years, then started my own business in the construction. The business folded at the beginning of this year due to the fact that the work dried up almost overnight, well anyway in the period of Christmas 2008 and new year 2009. Problem is also that we are being flooded with cheap east european labour that I myself cannot compete against, do you want to work for 6 euro an hour? Living space is very expensive here, especially in the Private sector, presuming you know the immigration protocol and have found a job then your best bet is to register with a Woning Corporatie (housing association) but again can expect to wait at least a year depending on where, Amsterdam is probably 5 years waiting list. You will have problems learning dutch in the beginning as all the dutch will talk to you in english regardless of whether your trying to speak the language or not, then tell you, you can't speak dutch as it's the most difficult language in the world, which again is absolute crap as it's very simple and no harder to learn than spanish or portuguese. I asked my dentist an educated man why the dutch think that and he replied
" it's all the F*****G foriegners here telling us that all the time" If you speak russian then dutch will be a cake walk, pani majesz? I learnt dutch in less than three months but am fluent in Polish and German aswell so have language talent. Look at some dutch text preferably a news paper (comic) with a photo, the telegraaf is a good one, take your pen and re-arrange firstly the word Het (the) then look at the other words and cross out one of the double vowels eg. aa then look at your words with a little shuffling of the letters should be able to see a similar meaning english word in there somewhere. Then you will start to understand the text then it's all easy there after.
There are lots of transport and logistic companies that deal with Ukraine and Russia maybe a good place for you to look for work. Or there is an agency called "The Undutchables" which deal with non dutch speakers but again think it's more for higher educated people but never know.
I think your best bet at looking for work is to stay away from the large cities and head out into the small bum fuck towns. I'm leaving here and going to live in Poland as can't take it anymore, it's just one big rip off here and it's the government doing it to us.

Canna----I have to agree with you--To many foriegners. But thats everywhere you go these days. I lucked out and was stationed in the Netherlands right after the Viet Nam War. Met a beautiful young dutch girl, at the races. And the rest is history. I LOVE MOST of Holland. (I also have a summer home in USA,Germany & Malta) The only time I ever go to Amsterdam is strictly BUSINESS, (Not Herb related) In a matter of fact that would be the last place I would go.

If you havent consider this, "Its BAD TIMEs" everywhere you go right now. But if your still persistent, like Canna said. You would be better off in the smaller citys.

However, if you do make that leap over the pond, Keep this in MIND. "These Days"----Its not about how much education you have (well maybe a little) or your experience (also maybe a little) OR HOW MUCH you kick ass at what you do. IT'S WHO YOU KNOW.

Also when I first started looking for work (IN THE TULIP fields/LMAO). (Now this was in 1995) I met someone thru somebody I knew and volunteered to work for free (Mechanized Tulip Cutter/LOL). It did lead to a paid p/t position. And later fulltime. But remember I had/have a dutch wife.
Amsterdam has gotten god awful, I first visited the Dam in 1973, NOT the same place.

You need a sofi number from the inland revenue first (belastingdienst) which you get on presenting your passport EU, then you can look for work

I'm living in North Brabant, near Eindhoven. If you came here 10 years ago it would have been easier as there was an enormous shortage in manpower.
Poland is'nt so bad, unemployment is falling because their all leaving to work for next to nothing in the western part of europe, england is a popular spot for them. But it's got it's spin off as property prices there have plummeted, I bought a very big farm house, barn, buildings on a 2000 m2 plot for 22.5 k euro. Do you only want to come to NL. for the weed or are you looking for a new life? if it's a new life then would suggest going to a scandanavian country, Norway in Particular. If it's for the weed then you can blow all over europe, just don't get caught. How about teaching English or Russian, you might be able to earn your sandwich that way in one of the dutch university cities probably with the russian. That's what I have do to in Poland for the first few months for my residents permit. Not that I've got the patience for it or need the 1200 polish zloty a month (180 euro).
I'm not doing anything at the moment but going to set up a fabrication business, to make those Commercial American style BBQ smokers, on trailers.
Then either exploit one myself or sell to catering companies, first need to grow some capital

Firstly it states " Dutch grammer is more complex than english" Nonsense.
e.g. John "hoe gaat het met jou?" "How going it with you" literally I find the english much more complex "how is it going with you?"
translated "how are you?"
