What's new

the roots of satan

So for those who dont know i have located and hauled in the dirt necessary for a 50+- growop.
the last time i trecked in, i used folding shovels and smaller shovels and 3 broke of 3

This time i was much better prepared... not

both my brand new steel reinforced shovels busted, plus pitchfork...

the post digger laid on its side like a dead arab....

i have discovered the farm is abandonded because no one wishes to dig through these roots.. the roots infest the entire topsoil layer of 4-6 inches. all from these bushes with thick roots. now this may not sound like a big deal but let me tell you 1 square foot of this with the dirt all up in it weighs about 70lbs and its all stuck together. also i am no weakling by any means i can stand with anyone up to 200lbs for 6 3 min rounds.. but 2 hours of this broke me and my flippin shovels. there are old mounds that have large bushes on top and smaller ones on the sides and bottoms of the ditches. i was able to clear about 2 yards in 2 hours..

so my options now since i hauled and mixed 150lbs of dirt is containers, which i did not want to do because theyll be smaller. if anyone has any suggestions send them..

and i thought about burning it, but i would take down the whole forest.. all pine too

also there is sand at 14 inches followed by water... i want to do it in the ground!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can the native soil be shaken from the roots you dig out? Hauling in media is tough!

this would not be worth it.. i need to figure out something..

i have seen people use rubbermaid containers..
how many could i put in a big one?? 5 ???

dude search for the camo grow bags, 30 gals, premade drain holes, small, cheap, collapsable and light. i think worm's way carries them.....

well if you have full sun, probly just one, unless youe working with some low yielders. im growing mine out in 200 gallon smartpots outdoors this year. for stuff like sour bubble and kryptonite, i will put 5-10 in each bucket. but for huge yilding strands, even 2 plants would be pushing the limit of a 200 galloner.

those airpots are supposed to work real well outdoors too....

lmao! im serious man blast it open!!...unless you think there is rock underneath?

a gallon of water weighs 8 pounds... so depending on how hydrated your soil is?? lets just say3-6 pounds dry 8-11 pounds wet X 1500 = A LOT

if its a good spot, dig what you can, cut the roots out with a tree limb cutters. (a bolt cutters for tree limbs)now you have a decent hole. fill with your compost mix or whatever and grow. i have turned over 3 shovels of dirt and filled with compost and the results have been 8-15 footers. its a fact.
just my thoughts and XP on it.

yea have you brought out a sawsall ( reciprocating saw)...

that would take care of the roots then just create a raised bed on top..

once your plants get a foothoold they will dominate the roots you destroyed or damaged.... i am completely talking chit...never grew outdoors just using my imagination..

a razorback round-point reinforced-back shovel with the back side of the edge sharpened at a steep angle (not like a knife, more like a scissor blade) and a 1" wide sharp v-cut in the tip so it will stay on the root without sliding to one side or the other.. there are no roots in nature that can withstand that with 250 lbs of me jumpin on it, except huge ones. if you have roots too big to chop with the shovel, your too close to the trees :smoke:

amstel...... i would blow it up if i could...

i know this is hard to understand but the roots of these flippin bushes are thicker underground than they are on top. they inhabit the top 4 inches of soil. i cut with a spade shovel a square foot and literally just lifted the square out. this took 2 hours and i was left with busted tools and a hole big enough for 2 plants.

this field is soo perfect in everyway except for the roots.

now i am really lost again, this is my first outdoor.. and i have been beaten back by the forest twice now. grow bags are not practical, because i am in need of 50.. i have enough dirt to put 50 in the ground, the dirt is mixed up and sitting in a tarp waiting for the holes to be dug....

i dont have access to scissor shovels, or razor sharp shovel blades. i am thinking of using the big metal pry bar at home depot. its alls thats left. i need to buy more shovels, this is going to be my fifth shovel im buying? i hate home depot too

Make sure that the sawzall stays somewhat clean, or you'll just be wasting more money on that too. I agree, rent an auger or something, that'll tear that shit up quick, for probably less than $40 a day. Dont blow it up. If you seriously HAVE to have it in the ground, spare no expense and get the gas powered auger
