HERBAL HEALING: Md. lawmaker pushes bill to study medical marijuana

By The Associated Press • March 24, 2009

ANNAPOLIS — A Montgomery County lawmaker is pushing legislation that would require Maryland create a task force to study medical marijuana issues.

Delegate Henry Heller says he doesn’t use medical marijuana himself. Some of Heller’s neighbors, however, in a Silver Spring senior community have told him they wanted to use it to treat serious illness but they were afraid of running afoul of the law.

The state has less severe fines for people convicted of marijuana possession who can demonstrate medical necessity for the drug, but they can still be arrested.

A number of medical marijuana advocates told the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday that Maryland is sending mixed messages about using marijuana to provide relief from debilitating illnesses such as cancer or HIV.

It's about freakin' time! :2cents:

Just in case you want to say how much you appreciate this-:woohoo:

Technically, yes maryland does have medical mj, but there is no actual program setup like cali or other states have where u can grow a certain # of plants and have a certain amounts of dried buds....instead they only allow qualified patients to get a marinol prescription. and marinol absolutely sux from what a good friend of mine told me...it does almost nothing, barely even got him buzzed...he expected it to feel like brownies or something but it did almost nothing he said...plus the pills have to be kept refridgerated...o well, i think ur right tho, maryland is prolly next in line to join all the other states...i hope so neways:smoker:

I sure do hope they change the law. I have my Doc's blessing but they can still kick my door down, take my shit, lock me up and make me have to post bail and get a lawyer. They say only $100 fine if you can prove medical necessity after the fact. By my calculations it would cost a lot more in the end.

Wow, I used to live in Mr. Heller's district. It's just got me chuckling to myself to think this came out of Leisure World. For those not familiar, LW is an over-55 community, and the residents seem to have a mean average age of about 106. Seriously, go to the community center and you hear conversations like, "My grandson just retired and just doesn't know how he'll stretch his 401(k) for another 50 years..."

I googled Mr. Heller and found out that ASA has a Maryland chapter. Maryland Medical Marijuana Meetups ---> http://www.meetup.com/marylandmedicalmarijuana/
