I have a 25lb dog and he freaks me out when he snarls I dunno how you guys can have 100lb+ Dogs if that thing got pissed off at you

If it gets 'pissed' at you, your dog should put its damn head down and look salty. Unwavering trust, respect and loyalty are essential for any kind of healthy relationship between a dog and its owner. The whole point of a domestic dog is that it has a natural inclination have a submissive respect for its owner, as long as its owner gives it reason to do so. reasons to do so include treating it properly, and in the case of working dogs like the pit, giving it a 'job' to do. Your dog doesn't want to be the alpha, it just thinks it does.

I've had firsthand experience with a lot of breeds, and as far as working drive and TOTAL determination go, I don't know any breed that's superior to a well bred pit. It's when that drive and determination are misguided, or totally ignored, that problems arise.

As for BSL, in my eyes pitbulls aren't truly a 'breed', so how can you ban them? Are they also going to ban staffies? What about other bully breeds? For an analogy to our favorite plant, it's like trying to ban skunk. the aim is to ban a specific strain, but the people banning it don't realize it's not a strain, but a much more general subgroup.

fuck banning pits...sharpeis, poodles n akitas are some aggressive mofos.

as ceaser says you aren't being a very good pack leader if your dog snarls
at you. time to be calm and assertive. haha...

anyway controlling a big dog isn't hard and usually training takes place while
there pups so it isn't a problem. bigger, older dogs are harder train but it can
be done depending on the case. if my dog ever snarled at me or does anything
wrong they are corrected immediately and they know who there leader is. haha.
next time your dog snaps correct it quickly and keep doing it until your dog learns.
you don't have to hit the dog to correct it either. not saying you would but just putting
that out there.

Top 5 Family Dogs

Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retriever, or Labrador, is a medium-sized dog that is renowned for its fun spirit and affable camaraderie. Generally 21" to 24" inches tall, it is considered to be one of the most obedient and reliable dog breeds in the world.

Golden Retriever
This versatile breed (21" to 25") is famous for its vigilance, intelligence, friendly demeanor and gentle nature. With proper training, dogs of the Retriever family can be the most ideal of all the family pets. They are safe company for children too.

Boxer
These short-haired and medium-built dogs (21" to 25") have an extremely kid-friendly nature. They are very exuberant, high-spirited and very patient, which makes them good play companions. They are also ideal watch-dogs.

English Springer Spaniel
With their smooth temperament and highly affectionate nature, this long-legged breed (19" to 21") is a very popular family dog. They can be wonderful playmates for children. Their boundless stamina, however, demands adequate exercise.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier a.k.a American Pit Bull Terriers
This breed has short coats and is of medium built (14" to 16"). Fondly known as "The Nanny Dog" in England, this muscular dog is famous for its protective temperament and bold nature. They are suitable for small families with children.

Although the Staffordshire is one of about four(4) distinctive varieties of APBT's, they are of all of similar tempermant and disposition.

A study, published this week (actually in June 2008) in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, with researchers questioning 6000 dog owners had some surprising conclusions. The dog breed most likely to bite was not the Pit Bull, Rottweiler, or German Shepherd, but …....wait for it....…the Dachshund. Following second was the Chihuahua, followed by the Jack Russell Terrier

It's piece of shit owners that have given these dogs their bad name.

How many people do you know that get one and immediately teach the thing to attack everything they see. That's how they raise them and then they become labeled as mean because the dog is trying to please the owner.

On the other hand, the same dog trained by a loving owner is a great pet and no threat unless provoked.

The problem is how do you know who is a good owner and who is an owner that just wants a mean dog to make himself feel cool? There is no doubt they are a breed that can easily be trained to be mean by a foolish owner. And they are so smart they then attack things to please their owner and then they get called dangerous....

I believe it, I know people who had 4 dachsunds that took down a coyote. One of them was killed and the other 3 tore it to pieces afterwards.

Never could get your hands too close to these dogs. Nippers, they were.

That's the one that bit my ass! I walked into their yard with the owner knowing. She didn't say boo about dogs as she left the front to meet me at the back, I was already there going to climb her TV tower.

A good thing I had a hammer in my hand, the one who faced me got that & stopped being aggressive immediately. The one that circled behind me bit my ass. Tricky guys, like they had a plan.

So lady your dog just bit me Ohh no not my dogs. Yeah the one may have a little headache for a while. I didn't notice I had a wound until later when I pulled my pants down as my jeans were fine. I had two tooth marks down the cheek of my ass, he knew not to bite my wallet side. I wonder if there's still a scar. Thankfully they don't lock jaw, it would of gotten a little messy & I don't like to hurt animals. Never attack an Irishman with a hammer or a hockey stick in his hand.

Ah...just another example of how laws try to end the problem by attacking its surface and ignoring the roots from which it stems.

Here is an idea--->
Ban unintelligent, irresponsible owners. (seriously you can spot them a mile a way!)
No puppy is born vicious, that's like saying a baby is born a killer.

i read that pit bulls are as dangerous as marijuana!

....reminds me of a bilboard i saw driving thru Utah.

one half the sign was a rattlesnake or cobra...the other half was a picture of a joint

the words underneath said something like "both are just as deadly"...ill see if i can google that sign.

Ohh, I don't deny that any dog could bite someone, hell...they do have teeth. It's the propensity ,along with temperament (as well as other factors i.e. socialization, enviroment) that increases the likelihood of a particular breed to bite over others that has been tested and proven by groups like the SPCA and ATTS.

Sucks that you got bitten, quite sad really. Springers are awesome dogs.

One other misnomer (since you mentioned jaw-locking), is that it's a myth....Pitty's don't lock their jaws, they just have very powerful jaw muscles,as do many breeds.

One other thing I think is important to mention is this, dogs are very receptive, intuitive creatures (sounds like my wife ) and will respond to what they are given in terms of vibes, I'm not saying you're a bad person or anything like that, it's just that dogs feed off of fear and such.

The flip side of that is, I trust my dog's intuition and if lets me know (and I have complete control of my dogs) that he would prefer you not to approach, i'll ask you not to come onto my property. Dogs are great judges of character that way.

Peace,

People ask if my dog bites & I tell them all dogs bite. So don't stop petting him or he may. Than I let them off the hook. I have the smallest of the retrievers, a Canadian breed NSDTR. Anyone that walks into my yard unannounced may be bit by him. He's got a tad of a mean streak in his backyard. Had the woman warned me of a dog any dog I would of had her take them inside. I blame her not the dogs.

The Canadian province of Ontario, on August 29, 2005 enacted a ban on Pit Bulls. It was the first province or state in North America to do so.[49] The breeds listed in the ban[50] can no longer be sold, bred, or imported and all Pit Bull owners must leash and muzzle their Pit Bulls in public. A 60 day grace period has been put in place to allow for owners to have their Pit Bulls spayed or neutered.[51] Also it left a period to allow municipalities to adjust to the new law. Prior to the bill's passage, the Ontario government cited what it deemed the success of a Pit Bull bylaw passed by Winnipeg, Manitoba.[52] In October 2008, the Ontario Court of Appeal rejected a challenge to the law and re-affirmed its legality.[53]

F that I've been chased by 3 of them and I've been chased by 2 collies. I friggin hate those "family dogs" My dogs pit was friendlier. Well my dogs small but he has an attitude I never got him neutered plus he's a teenager. He's a good dog but when he was all snarly it was when he was on meds with steroids in them so he was all roid ragey and trying to fight every other dog he saw too

Agreed 110%.....It is the owners fault most times.

I don't compile the lists my friend, my views would be biased for the Pit Bulls.

If I had made that list, Pit's would be the #1 family dog.

smaller dogs are more vicous i think. since they dont have the size of a large dog they have to act like they are as big.
. i hate those "yipper" dogs. hung out with a few great danes before, and they are the sweetest dogs ever.

Yeah I was just reading up on the pit bull dog since we don't see them as often these days. The myth of locking jaws is perpetuated by a couple instances where the dog becomes unconscious or killed it can't relax their jaw & therefore would be thought of as locking. I'll remember that when swinging the hammer.
