Conversion problems

Ok for example they tell me to use bone meal at 10lbs per 1,000 square feet. Can someone show me the math to figure out how many cups to use per gallon?

If you look at the sticky "Organics for Beginners" at the top of the forum menu, LC's mix states that you should have 1 cup/cf or 2 TBSP/gal of bone meal in your mix.

Thanks. I was just using bone meal as an example though. I'm really just trying to learn how you do the conversion from pounds per foot to cups per gallon.

But I suppose you would have to weigh a cup of bone meal? I'm not sure

Here is what I tried to do though:

1. I measured the diameter of a 5 gallon bucket (11 inches)
2. Took it's radius (5.5 inches)
3. Multiplied by PI (17 inches)
4. squared it (298)

So the surface area of a 5 gallon bucket is 300 square inches roughly. 1,000 square feet is 144,000 square inches. So 10 pounds / 144000 is 0.02/300. So 0.02 pounds per 5 gallons. Now I said 1 pound = 2 Cups (this is true for some things, but not everything) So if 1 pound = 2 cups then 0.02 pounds = 0.04 cups.

So 0.04 cups per 5 gallons.

But i'm not sure this is right lol I need to smoke a joint

Ohhhh i see what you're saying...way too much work for me

It seems like way too much work in general. Even if you get all the conversions down right it seems like it'd be real hard to measure out .04 cups.

I agree with you. I would convert it to tablespoons lol

But seriously I would like to get remotely in the ball park of the recommended doses for fertllizers. I don't want to burn the girls!

I added one more factor to my calculations. Most of the fertlizers are assuming your just working the fertllizer into the top 3 inches or so of the soil. The 5 gallon bucket is 12 inches tall. 12/3 = 4. So I multiplied the results by 4. And then by 10 to figure out what it would be for 50 gallons. This is what I came up with

If you were to add these fertlizers to 50 gallons
-----------------------
Alfalfa Meal - 4 Cups
Mex. Guano - 4 Cups
Blood Meal - 1.5 Cups
Rock Phosphate - 8 Cups
Indo. Guano - 8 Cups
Bone Meal - 1.5 Cups
Kelp Meal - 1.5 Cups
Green Sand - 8 Cups
K-Mag - 1 Cups

Do any of these values look reasonable?

Why can't you just use the recommended dosages on this here forum? I would trust those a lot more than the recommended dosages on the labels.

Oh i'm more than willing to take advice and learn from those that know more than me. Because I"m just learning organics and I don't know shit.

But at the same time I'm an inquisitive person and like to learn, so just seeing if anyone can tell me if I'm on the right track here. There has to be a way to figure this out correctly, I just don't know what it is.
