i just changed over from a 400 hps to a 600 hps, me plants are 2ft 10 inches tall and the hps is 14 inches away from the tops of em and i cant get the lamp any higher at all ive run out of room, how close can i get em to the light?is there anything else i can do,the strain im growing is alaskan ice.i was gonna bend em but went off the idea on me last post when i was told id have to snap the main trunk/stem.was told it would heal but didnt like the idea.HELP please folks. peace out:joint:

you could LST, which is basically just bending / tying without snapping. check it out for yourself, you should be able to bend over the main stem a decent amount without damaging anything.

Much attention is generally paid to the distance between plant tops and the HPS. When I first started growing, I thought this was because it was incredibly important not to get your HPS too close. After a little experience, I realized that growers pay so much attention to this particular variable for the exact OPPOSITE reason. Many growers have their lamps too far away, and this drastically cuts the lamps effectiveness due to the Inverse Square Law.

In general, plants will tell you if they're not diggin' the lamps close proximity. Bleached tops, followed by burnt tops are an obvious sign. I personally have my 600 watters about 14" from the tops. I have done it this way for quite a while and all is well. The signs of a lamp being too far away on the other hand, are much more subtle and drawn out. Slower growth, stretching, etc are all signs of a lamp being too far away, but many growers don't pick up on these signs until it's too late.

If you're seeing signs that indicate the lamp is too close, then look into LST, training, tying them back slowly, or some other solution that's readily available on this site. If you're just worried that problems might arise because the lamp is a little closer than what you've read it should be, then don't sweat it, because the numbers that you typically hear (18" for a 600 is a common guideline) are just estimates. Strain, ambient temp, airflow between lamp and tops, etc all play a part in how close you can get it.

If all else fails, put your hand where the tops are and see how it feels under there.

RELIANT, said it well, I am running a 600 as well and was thinking about this at times, I just sorta read my plants. Show us some pictures and watch the heat, you have some sorta ventilation set up?

Supercropping (crushing the stem and folding it over) will freak out the grower but, the plant won't care in the least (some strains will simply straighten up in a few hours.) Many use it as their main method of garden control.

Not suggesting you should do it, only that you are free to do it with impunity.

Have a chart

crushin the stem and folding it over? sounds br00tal

It's terrifying the first time. Chuck Norris would have a heart attack just thinking about it. But, not even Chuck Norris can beat the Mighty Weed.

sorry i didnt see the thread stones:joint: but thats a perfect tie over ime.......if you grow that shit well and it has the stamina:yoinks: your hopefully gonna have to reverse your tie down to a support in 5 or 6 weeks, it can be done with string but id suggest grabing some yo-yos to save fiddling about, most hydros do them around 50p each ! a dozen will do

check the pic so where on the right wave length, as youve took the vertical stem support away horizontally with no screen, a good heavy cola which il add looks extremely possible may need the support in the last few weeks of bloom.....just saying 'be prepared:woohoo:
