Compost Tea and Superthrive?

I'm new to the idea of compost tea, but I love it and I think my plants will too. I know better than to use Superthrive in flower, but in veg, I think it really helps reduce stress a lot. I know it might not be an "organic" fertilizer, but I want to mix it with one. Will there be any negatives to this, or should I give it to the plants separately?

I don't know what Superthrive is but assuming it is a chemical fertilizer, I suggest you review what compost tea is and the reason for using it. CT guy has posted some resources previously and there are a couple of papers on my website which may help; www.microbeorganics.com

Wow, first person I have ever met who didn't know what Superthrive is..... are you not in the US? It's a plant vitamin and hormone supplement that is mainly targeted at relieving stress. A 6 ounce bottle of the stuff lasts a couple years. I also put it in my cloner to reduce cutting stress.

Superthrive isn't necessary in organics. Kelp or seaweed will provide most of the stuff in Superthrive. Try Thrivealive if you want. Liquid Karma is even better.

If I don't use either of those products would it be sufficient? I'm dirt poor, have medical problems, and I already have the superthrive.....

According to 'WikiPedia' (and you can take that for whatever value you have in their entries), Superthrive
is a liquid concentrated growth enhancer product for plants, which has been available since 1940. It contains ".09% Vitamin B1, .048% 1-Napthyl acetic acid".[1] The first is an acidic vitamin and the latter is an acidic plant hormone. SUPERThrive claims to make 50 vitamins and hormones available; you get "50 in 1".

SUPERthrive was developed by Dr. John A. Thomson, now 96 years old and still at work. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 for his work in marketing and advertising.
Some countries have banned this product (as well as some states like Oregon) not because it's a bad product but rather because of the outrageous claims made by the manufacturer who received a 'lifetime achievement' award for his skills in marketing and advertising. It wasn't for contributions to horticulture.

I wouldn't use it for any purpose/claim and especially in a compost tea.

YMMV

On the plus side, I accidentally stole this stuff anyway. I was going through the auto-checkout and thought I scanned it but later saw on the receipt that I didn't.... oh well, if it was anywhere but Wal-Mart I would have gone back and paid for it. At least I don't have to feel ripped off if it's claims are bogus. I do think that it does seem to reduce stress in plants I have used it on, but I wouldn't say it's everything the marketing makes it to be...

I suppose, but I feel like Robin Hood every time I swindle Wal-Mart.......

Not saying I do it a lot, but I've accidentally forgot to scan things more than a few times.

Wal-Mart has cost more americans their jobs than any other "American" company.

So with that I must say, keep up the good work.

butttt,,,,

i am also curious about this topic as i have acquired some superthrive from my local store. i have heard many great things about it (some negative too), but i am hesitant to use it if it is not organic.

I'd say it's definitely not "organic" as defined by the OMRI. I've also heard that molasses also provides most of the things in ST. Anyone know?

Superthrive is a legendary product.....its been around for as long as i can remember and we have had lots of discussions about its applications.....

The main thing it contains is B-vitamin complexes.....this is especially important for reducing transplant shock, so when you are re-potting into larger pots it would be helpful to apply a superthrive solution to the new larger hole.....

The main hormone in this product is believed to be Gibberellic Acid (GA).....this hormone was first widely applied in the 1950s (when superthrive was invented), so it is almost certain that Gibberellic Acid is the primary hormonal ingredient......here's some info about Gibberellin (note that the effects of GA seem to correspond exactly with the recommended uses of Superthrive):

Functions of Gibberellins

Active gibberellins show many physiological effects, each depending on the type of gibberellin present as well as the species of plant. Some of the physiological processes stimulated by gibberellins are outlined below (Davies, 1995; Mauseth, 1991; Raven, 1992; Salisbury and Ross, 1992).
Stimulate stem elongation by stimulating cell division and elongation.
Stimulates bolting/flowering in response to long days.
Breaks seed dormancy in some plants which require stratification or light to induce germination.
Stimulates enzyme production (a-amylase) in germinating cereal grains for mobilization of seed reserves.
Induces maleness in dioecious flowers (sex expression).
Can cause parthenocarpic (seedless) fruit development.
Can delay senescence in leaves and citrus fruits.

I think the reason not to use Superthrive in flowering is due to the "Induces maleness in dioecious flowers"......cannabis has 2 distinct sexes (dioecious), and there is a slight possibility that female flowers could revert to male flowers if superthrive is applied.....the chances of this happening are probably more likely in a foliar feeding application, but its probably wise to discontinue Superthrive during flowering phase.....the main thing is, personally, i have not seen the amazing results that Superthrive claims to produce.....Liquid Karma seems to be a much more effective plant tonic (just follow the recommended dosages).....

There are many other "organic" sources of Gibberellic Acid, including Kelp.....from all i have ever seen and read, Kelp can be used during both vegetative and flowering (though i would taper off the Kelp applications during the second half of flowering)......Thrive Alive Organic (the green label) is a good alternative to chemically-derived Gibberellic Acid if you are interested in utilizing Gibberellins in your fertilizer regimen.....

:ying: kind regards from guineapig :ying:

You might wana read up on the Karma thing.

I know do-do happens, but ya really do reap what ya sow.

I think I would punch karma in the face if it got pissed because I stole from WalMart I mean think about all the fucked up shit they do like earl says(Jason Lee My Names Earl) karma doesn't have hands so maybe its just borrowing mine and if I were you I'd throw the superthrive away I have some but I never use it IMO its not worth the damage it does to my micro herd you can't have an organic garden if you put chems into it
