A Great Loss
January 28th, 2009
Beloved Pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy Powell, passed away last night. We will post more info shortly. The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you.

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd twice, last year with Kid Rock and the year before with the Doobie Brothers (was probably the BEST show i've seen)

Hopefully they will continue to tour, 'cause even though I've never been a die-hard Skynyrd fan, their concerts are so much fun and their music really is awesome, especially after a few joints and a few drinks.

R.I.P. Billy!

Thanks for the somber news. Skynyrd was one of the best. Hopefully Powell's death was natural and timely.

I do agree it's silly to keep a band going after many important members have died, but that shouldn't bely the loss of Powell. He was no imposter, he simply died later the Gaineses and Van Zant.

Exactly!! Those guys aren't Skynyrd! Kinda like the Jimi Hendrix experience, with no Jimi, or the Doors with no Jim. It's just WRONG!! Do NOT support these imposters.

Impostors? heh. I would argue but I'm tired and don't want this thread to turn into an argument, but I don't see how ANY band that continues to tour after a member leaves or dies would be impostors...
I support them!

Its a shame that next time (if there is one) I see Skynyrd perform its gonna be without Billy (his solo on Freebird was perfect both times I saw them), but the spirit of their music will live on and I hope I am fortunate enough to be able to see whats left of them perform again, under the name Lynyrd Skynyrd or other.

There's still a guitar player around... Van Zant's brother is singing. I saw them last year and they still rock. They play Skynyrd songs and they play them well. So toke up a fat one for Billy and respect his white grand piano and all the awesome-ness he played on it cause he sure as hell deserves it.

They acknowledged Ronnie, by making Freebird an instrumental, and hanging his hat on the mic--
Nobody felt the pain more than they did--
They have moved on, and have suffered yet another loss--
Much respect to Skynyrd...

Very much agreed.

I remember last year I think, on CMT, they did a set with Montgomery Gentry (I believe) and watching them do "Red,White and Blue" was simply awesome.

Not that I would expect you guys to understand, most people don't seem to. But when the main creative force behind a band dies, the band is dead. What's wrong with making another band, with new members and a new name? Instead a lot of them replace half the band, including the main lyricist, and keep the name. They don't even have to die really, look at the sickening case of John Fogerty and "CCR", now the R is for "Revisited". These guys played at a Hempfest back in the late nineties, and you should have seen all the idiots who thought they were actually watching a "CCR" show. Everyone I told about it at the show had no idea, and thought it was lame of them to do after hearing about it.

p.s. Give me all the neg rep you want, it doesn't hurt my feelings. Infact, here's some postitive K to you, just to show there's no hard feelings.

Despite your feelings this was a thread for Powel. He has been the keyboard player since everyone was around. So I can't really see how your argument is valid.

I think anyone that goes to see "skynyrd" these days isn't expecting to see the songwriting geniuses much less R. van zant and gaines..., they are expecting to see the remaining members and just want the spirits of the songs to go on cause it's such great music. They expect the same old songs played the same old way. More of a tribute band that still has rights to the name cause a few original members are still around.

All this is is another loss of a great musician. Despite your feelings about skynyrd, I think you missed the point.

Puff puff pass it to you sin seed. Hit it for billy
