Question for the AUTO growers

Greetings all, new member, first post.

I just custom built a 4' X 4' X 6' grow cab. Only going to grow about 4 to 6 lowlife auto AK47 plants at a time. Was all set to buy a 400W HPS/MH switchable air cooled set up and ran into a few dissenting opinions.

My local grow shop owner advised me that the autos dont veg well under MH and I should use a 125W CFL and then go under HPS for flower. Several grow journals ive followed used HPS for the entire grow, while others swear by vegging the autos under MH.

Im just trying to use my lighting dollars wisely. Ill be growing the autos and only the autos for the next year or so.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Hey MuyLoco, sounds all good for now, it is true that alot of growers prefer to use CFL lights for veg; they work really well for veg.

if i were you i'd buy 125watt of CFL then when you turn to flower just stick your hps light in there and take out the CFL's, alternatively you could buy a 200w hps/mh and add it to the room when want to flower ( leaving the cfl's in there ) any other opinions?

hope you do well, it sounds like you have everything sorted. do you know what temps and humidity your cab has? also i know someone using 4 x 4 x 6 and he has 8 plants in there so you could probably fit in a few more if you tie them to the side when they're big enough.

good luck, and welcome to IC

250w mh will surely give you better result than if using same wattage of CFL's.

Thanks for your input ninja, thats exactly what the owner of my local shop told me to get. I wonder why the MH's aren't good for the auto seedlings, seems like they'd have everything a good girl needs.

Hey perakko, that's basically why I was gonna get the 400W switchable HPS/MH, thinking that the bigger wattage in MH would be great for autos. But, I keep running into experienced growers advising against it.

My local shop owner went into why the autos dont like MH for vegging. Unfortunately, me and my buddy were so baked we both forget....I dont think it was heat related, but something with the genetics and grow cycle.

Yeah, this was my first time buying anything for growing, first time in a hydro/grow shop of any kind. I'd read on forums about how to refer to my "plants" without actually saying what I'm growing. But, 5 mins in he just dropped the charade and went right into the autos, ferts, soil and lighting specific to autoflowering...I was shocked. Too bad I was tore up. lol

My first indoor LR´2s are just finishing, I grew them for a few weeks under a 18W fluoro and after that they´ve been under a 600W HPS. They´ve done well, I just started a test grow using LR2xAK47 and I´ll be doing the whole grow under the 600W HPS.

i really don't see why autos would want anything different regarding light (spectrum) to non-auto cannabis plants. they're all pretty much the same, give em light, water and nutrients and they'll grow.

on the other hand what i think is more importat with autos is to give them a alot of rootspace and they'll reward you with better yield in the end.

good luck, autos are way overooked imho.

Hey man, I always go from germination straight to MH then switch to HPS at 12/12 I never have any problems as I've grown lowryders like this and my MH gives them that extra boost when packing on the leaves then the HPS gives them a little bit of stretch just right for budsites.

I personally havent used floros before so I dont know.

Hope this helps and good luck
