DWC bubbler bucket...how big an airpump?

AFAIK keeping your solution well aerated is also good for keeping the bad bacteria/fungi/virus from taking over. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Stay up!!

from a practical standpoint, i started off using two large dual output aquarium pumps with airstones for approximately 32 gallons or so, and have devolved to one unit with a bare tube. no visible difference.

So you're saying that just a plain old tube with NO airstone is good enough? Interesting...

remember that air pumps do get hot. anybody ever check the air temp? if you have high ambient temps, then your air pumps are pumping hot air into your water which is not good. i put my alita air pump in front of my a/c and it still was a little warm but it had no effect on my water temps 68 degree all day. before i could never figure out why my water temps were matching the ambient air temps only a couple hours after the lights came on.

Ya but it is a little louder because the bubbles popping are bigger. The advantage is that your airstones dont get clogged.

The disadvantage is that you have much less DO. Airstones are designed to put out large amounts of DO, where as with an open line you are just relying on the water movement at the surface to create DO.

"much less" is hyperbole, and i challenge you to quantify that statement. why do power heads work so well then? it is a very complicated subject to get into when the size in bubbles makes such a tiny difference, if any at all.

i submit that in terms of return on investment, as it were, bare line saves you time and money. i could go on about things people seem to take for granted that you "have to have" but i won't.

the formula posted is right out of my water farming botany text. Its a basic equation for calculating a body of waters maximum DO level. The equation takes into account altitude, Temp of water, Rh, and gives you the maximum levels of DO. Once you use this you can easily see that water contains fairly low levels, and the amount required to maintain and replenish to levels is not a high as some might assume.

I didnt notice a difference and I did a run with and without airstones. Unless you actually have a DO meter I dont think its fair to pass that on as valid information.
