Box Up And Running!--346 Watt CFL

Hey all you ICMagger's out there, this is Tumuli Shroomaroom here; you may have seen a couple posts before from when I was still working out my box but without further adieu, I present my box:

The Outside: (not yet light proof)
49457Inside3.jpg

The Light Configuration: 346 Watts total
Green-Y-socket splitters
Orange-40 W CFL (Warm White)
Red-26 W CFL (WW)
Blue-42 W CFL (WW)

only problem is I accidentally broke a 26 watter yesterday, so I'm a bulb short until further notice

extra: temps are pretty good so far, they average about 60 degrees when completely off, and when all lights are on it gets up to about 75 degrees tops

The Air Flow:
49457Inside1.jpg

As you can see I have a vent cover over 2 passive intake computer fans, this air is exchanged through the box with the aid of the fan, the exhaust is a single computer fan.

--smell will be made rid of with this:

I am going to purchase either Fox Farm nutrients or General Hydroponics (Flora-series or the Flora-nova--can't make up my mind!!)

This grow will be a LST or SOG (think Dr. Budgreen, but with the smaller 16.9 fl. ounce water bottles and various other bottles I have around the house??) grow depending on how things present themselves and which seems better for my circumstances; I currently have Skunk seeds, some really good beans (no-name) from a fellow grower friend and just a bunch of various decent beans I've picked up over time.

I'm open to suggestions and definitely need some help considering I'm very new at this sort of thing

Thanks everybody for all your help

Tumuli, out!

Nice looking box!

I had a question, how much did that filter cost you?

It was only like $10.00, they are located in the filter section right near the HEPA filters and stuff at most hardware stores (they have 'em at target and k-mart and all those other stores too).

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to source supplies, and I think cannibalizing things is going to be much more cost effective than buying stuff from hydroponics stores.

Home Depot has 95% of what you need. The only thing they didn't have for me was worm castings and coco coir (and a few things for organic ferts). But everything else, they've got it. And I got my HPS and MH lights off of craigslist for $150, just search "HPS." Good luck.

Peace,

Oh, and good luck InRainbows727

Thanks White!

I would also have to agree with White on the Home Depot thing, I was able to get my entire box (except the box itself) and the nutes at Lowe's, I'm sure you would be able to find almost everything there. The only thing that would not be at Lowe's is computer fans --I just had a couple laying around here, but those are easy enough to come across.

Okey dokey, just took some pics updating the box. I also germinated my seeds, so far I have 7 typical bagseed cracked beans, in addition to 3 other beans that I got from a fellow grower (no-name) that I found to be pleasurable (all of which I've planted in an assortment of bottles filled with GreenThumb potting soil, this is kind of a Dr BudGreen style grow); with that I am germinating 3 skunk seeds, 1 Neville's haze seed, 1 of the no-name mentioned before.

Welcome to the closet:

A little look at what I'm doing:

Considering the distance is so far from the floor to my lights, I put a basin on stilts with magazine cases, Tah-Dah!

I had a little temperature problem:

so I took 1 more 26 watter out and I'm back to a 75-76 degree box.

Right now I'm at 24 hour light and intend to veg all of um and take some clones and see what happens(putting some in 12/12)

You have to use the actual address of the pic, usually ends in .jpg... right click and hit properties to get to that.

i looked into using the carbon pre filter but after searching around on here i found that the people using it said it didnt do the job..just giving you a heads up before you get into flower and are rushing around tryin to build a carbon filter

Yeah, I was thinking of using the filter as just an intake filter to prevent all the little dust globules that resonate around my box from getting inside; I'm vegging now and probably won't flower for a while, any suggestions on carbon scrubbers?? I'm looking to do it DIY, but if it means that it doesn't work, I might as well just get a can filter and a nice inline fan. What's everybody's opinion??

great job. i look forward to seeing what those bagseeds sprout.

Just a heads up on the smell of the whole operation. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that your filter won't take care of the smell. I wouldn't rain on your parade by mentioning it if it wasn't a security issue. Based on what you've done so far, I have no doubt that you'll figure something else out when the time comes.

Is that closet door going to be closed? If so, your options open up quite a bit because you could eventually set a can filter on the floor with a 4" vortex fan and just have it on 24/7. Wouldn't be possible if people see what's in the closet though.

The closet door remains closed at all times (it's a junk closet under the steps sort-of thing), so I can have a fan that is relatively loud, but I would very much prefer a quiet operation. I was looking at 100 CFM inline fans and carbon scrubbers, or B. Self Reliant said that vortex fans would be an option but I think these might be a bit too expensive for my tastes unless there is a vortex fan out there with the correct CFM that is under $50.00 (my rationale is that I will want to spend $100.00-150.00 dollars on the smell problem total if at all possible)--sorry I'm so picky, I'm currently funding a trip to Amsterdam and pinching pennies like no other:smoker:.

I can understand working within a budget. Most professionals do, regardless of what line of work they're in. That having been said. . .

There's two main factors that will dictate how effectively the smell is removed from your grow area. First is the effectiveness of the filter itself. For example, 50 lbs. of activated carbon will be more effective than an air purifier. Second is the amount of air that is run through your filtration system. For example, if you crunch the numbers and a 4" fan will cycle the space's air in 5 minutes, and a 6" fan will cycle it in 1.5 minutes, then the 6" will do a better job.

Once again, not trying to put you down for wanting to DIY, just want you to have realistic expectations since this relates to security. I did many DIY grows when I was in college, and I usually spent less than $50 on everything I needed, with the exception of the tools I needed to get rid of the smell. I personally found that there was no replacement for a very quiet and powerful fan that moved lots of air through an appropriate amount of carbon.

Good luck and happy growing!

go to harbor freight if you have one

they have a version of the blue blower but it has an adjustable nob for the fan speed

its perfect infinite adjustability !!!!!

o and its orange btw

I'm very open to suggestions at this point in time, I did the rough calculations for my box and anything over 100 CFM will be able to exchange the air in the box every 2.5-3 minutes (without taking into consideration the carbon filter and the amount it will take off the total CFM), so my question is posed towards anyone who knows about carbon scrubbers, I want to see what the greatest bang-for-my buck system is for my grow; I'm very open to suggestions (and I suppose price range) because I will be using this later on in life (with a grow area no bigger than one of the two Dr. BudGreen's 588 Watt perpetual cabs)
