i used to work at a aquaponics facility that grew tilapia for the food market. Ours was infested with parasites and often ended up sold to Asian street-market vendors from the city because no one else would buy it. Goofball who ran the place had a degree from a college where super rich people send their trust-fund kids to be educated with no letter grades that might hurt their feelings... got it into his head that one tilapia needs X cubic feet of water but didn't know enough about fish to realize that this Cichlid is a surface feeder and a 3 meter deep tank would NOT support a gazillion fish; they all ended up crowded in the first 2 feet of water column, rubbing all up on each other and getting stressed and sick.
I want my tilapia farm-raised in outdoor ponds in Chile, where it is happiest and healthiest, not in a moldy greenhouse in New England, thanks...

Sleepy, that looks AMAZING. I <3 Thai food.

You know the concept of the 'LocalVore'? Getting the most benefit with the least expenditure of energy by eating a diet based heavily on items that are produced locally. I love it in theory, but that place should have been growing a fish from a temperate climate (preferably THIS temperate climate, lol) outdoors in ponds. Don't tell anyone but tilapia and black crappie don't taste all that different... :D I'd be totally down to see someone do up a panfish farming operation and make them available locally, farmer-to-consumer.

Go put on yer Sunday best recycled polypropylene and hemp clothing, everyone! Charge up your electric car! Grab your re-useable shopping bags with the trite 'Be Green' type logo printed on them! We goin' to da farmers market for sum bluegill fillets! Yeeha!
