Breeding with Clone only strains

Ok follow along I hope not to confuse anyone LOL
This type of breeding pertains to using clone only strains which means using selfed pollen to cross with other clone only plants.

Here is an example I have wondered about lets say you have a 50 day clone only strain and want to increase or introduce more potency and a tastier flavor to the strain, Overall a 50 day strain with increased potency and flavor.

Or a frosty 70 day strain crossed with a tasty 50 day strain = 50 day tasty frosty strain.

Ok now the big question which one do you reverse to collect pollen from to use on to achieve a 50 day potent tasty strain.

For example lets say do we use a ECSD / OG kush selfed pollen to seed a Cush to increase flavor and shorten flowering time, this is an example so we can better understand what could be used.

What would be the female the 50 day or the 70 day day strain to achieve this.

You will find seed plants takeing longer in flower than the clone plants even if its a week or 2.

On top of that you will find most clones as there not true breeding expressing more than the female clone is so you will get some verity in your seeds you grow even if you selfed the clone with its self.

Normaly its a 50/50 mix male adding as much to the fem as the fem is to the line.

So if I were to take cuts of a seedling to find a consistant flowering time which one is likely to show earlier flowering. If a cross from a selfed pollen from a 70 day flowering strain to a 50 day strain does that increase my chances for finding a potent 70 day strain cut down to 50 days ? or vice a versa. ????? this is an intresting subject I too would like to know if using collidial silver to reverse pollen on clone to produce pollen then using it on another clone only strain.....

Hi Yerba, Budrunners, and good evening Hempy,

I don't believe it matters so much which you use as the male in this case. Many other factors are more important.

You could self the 70 day frosty strain to itself and review the progeny, if the vast majority of offspring are frosty and come in at +/- 70 days then we might say the clone is relatively true breeding for these traits. Repeat this test with the 50 day strain, if the vast majority are 50 days and tasty then we might say the same is true for that one. Then we could cross the two and have expectations for the f1, but my expectations would be a crop of +/- 60 day plants, I would expect the other traits to meet in the middle as well for the most part (assuming the parental lines bred true for them), f1's are fairly predictable in this manner- frostier than the 50 day, not as frosty as the 70, tastier than the 70, not as tasty as the 50 etc. I would want to take it one step further to the recombination generation (f2) to find what you're talking about for it is here that the extremes of the parental lines seem to shine through and you can pluck out which traits you want from each parental line. You may even find plants here that are quicker than 50 days, tastier than the 50day, frostier than the 70day, etc. However, working those plants then into a strain requires a bit more work. If they are not true breeding for these traits, which happens more often, like Hempy says, then you will see variation in the offspring during the progeny test. That wouldn't be so bad though, as in that variation you will likely find plants in there that meet all of your requirements, without doing any crossing at all.

Colina, budrunners, hempy thanks for some insight on things to expect. I had given it alot of thought its all trial and error. I was thinking if I had a F1 that expressed shorter flowering time 60 days -/+ with the visual frostiness and smell/taste that is desired would you use that same F1 selfed to pollinate the 50 day mother to produce a higher percentage of shorter flower times for the seeds produced with the desired traits.

Hola Yerba,

From what I have learned I think the real answer is to try it and see ... reading a bit of the varaious breeders, what they are up to and the problems they encounter, it is very hard to truly predict what will happen, probably even more so with a F1 that uses a S1 "dad" ... but please try it out and report your experiences, you may well find a whole lot of new friends if your Bubba Kush x Exodus Cheese combines as well as you hope it does !
