What is your technique to control roots?

I am planning to grow plants that are supposed to be 12 inches in diameter and about 40 tall when done, and packed with foliage top to bottom.

I will be giving them all the light they need from the sides. Though my actual cab is about 3.5square feet, it only really has an effective grow area of 2.1 square feet due to the lights and whatnot. I can only fit five of them in there, but with 250W per square foot, I see no reason I can't pack them with bud.

I am using 8 inch Wal-Mart plastic pots, and I have added extra drainage to them with a Dremmel tool. The soil mix is 25% Pro-Mix Ultimate Organic Mix, 25% Pro-Mix for containers, and 50% perlite.

Will I be stuck with a root-trimming nightmare? I really don't look forward to trying to extract the plant from the cab every time it needs a root trim. How do I discourage over-rooting, without slowing them down and preventing the height and shape I want the plant to grow in?

Edit* Here is a diagram of my desired plant profile:

Mainly I want to hear ideas on how to discourage the plant from becoming root bound, if that's even possible. It won't be very easy to place these in the cabinet and take them out. They're surrounded by fluorescent tubes on every side.

Ok Are you going to be able to see if its bug infested or how tall it is? or when it finishes atleast? Kind of reminds me of that joke about Santa Claus getting stuck in the Chimney.....Hah anyway,, if your concerned just repot it in a bigger pot just before you bud it. does that help any? and no don't worry about root bind why would you?
