hello all,

long time reader, first time thread starter...

i bought these mogul sockets:

notice the 2 wires...

the plug from the ballast to the mogul has 3 wires though and i dont know where that 3rd wire is supposed to go.

the color of the ballast to mogul wires are brown, yellow with a green stripe, and blue. i tried finding a picture online, but to no avail. im going to just be hanging these bulbs vertically if that helps.

also, i have eurosystems 1000w ballasts that are switchable from 120 to 240. i want to run two of them 120 and the other four 240 if that changes anything. thanks for your help!

Hey reachtdk: I'd say that the yellow & blue wires go to the socket - and the yellow/green wire goes to ground the hood/reflector.

I'm assuming that you have a starter or capacitor already wired into your ballast properly??

Hope this helps!

I want to be careful here as it sounds like you're not in the States where: Hot is black(small flat prong), Com is white (large flat prong) and Ground is green (rounded prong). If you can find which of your colors correspond to mine, we're in. Or, remove the socket and trace where the wires come from. The wire that stems from the center 'spring" connection is Hot. While the top pics were to show the screws that hold socket to base, the right shot shows the center "spring" connector. The other wire from the socket is Com. Whatever color left is ground.

The ground wire does NOT connect to the socket. It connects to the metal base holding the socket. If there's no such base, connect to the metal reflector.

Hey Freezer, really great free-standing socket idea - I'll need to make one of those!!

I'm not so sure that it matters which way the electricity flows thru the lamp, but it certainly never hurts to be consistent.

reachtdk - in FB's free-standing socket design, I'd ground the base (which he did) - IMHO, it's always a good idea to cover-up those bare wires on the bottom of the socket (like FB also did w/ the box)... remember, grounding is good, grounding is your friend!!

Truth in advertising. The socket assembly is factory made. I just disassembled it for demo purposes.

FB - thanks man. i didnt know that i had to ground that 3rd wire. i went back to the hydro store and they sold me these mogul caps that i can ground the 3rd wire to. it screws into the bottom of the mogul socket. =)

Aw shucks.

This gives me a chance at a correction I either missed or didn't know at the time...

I'm not so sure that it matters which way the electricity flows thru the lamp, but it certainly never hurts to be consistent.

The lamp will work either way but safety demands we hook up "live/hot" to the center post to avoid making the metal socket itself capable of shocking us.
