Great Find On Yesterday...

Not sure if anyone is using these or not, but they seem like they would work great for a DIY Carbon Scrubber...definitely alot less messy than loose carbon from the pet store...and they come with the velcro straps...

I built a scrubber last night, just waiting on my inline fan to get here so I can test it out...

You can pick these up at Lowes for like 10 bucks....Its item number 163426 if you do a search on the Lowes website...

I just built one myself. I have no idea as too longevity but, it certainly took care of the immediate problem. The brand I got has enough for two filters so, if I can get 3 weeks from one, I'm golden.

I imagine an inline might overpower it quickly, especially in a larger grow. For my one plant cab and axial fan ... time will tell.

So Freezerboy or anyone using these filters ,

Your axial fan....what are the specs on it? I have about 8 plants in bloom right now. Smell isn't too bad but I know it will get worse. I am trying to decide which route to go as far a fan setup. Granted I am not in a cab, theres more open floorspace, but I have a scrubber thats about 5 feet long and has a 6 inch collar for connecting the fan...any suggestions?
Peace...:joint:

I built one using a Pabst 4" 105cfm axial fan - worked ok for a while, but finally had to get a small 5" x 18" Carbonaire ($50) to really get the job done.

So Old Yeller...I see you had to upgrade. Did you ever try one of the DIY Scrubbers with the carbon you pour in? Did the carbon sheets work better? I am trying to get something put together that will handle 12 stinky ladies in an isolated part of the basement....:canabis:

You will definately need to use carbon along with those sheets, but like someone else already said they do work well as a prefilter. I use them on my intakes as well to keep bugs and dust out of the grow room.

I wish there was a magic cloth that you could simply wrap around a DIY filter and get rid of smell, especially for 10 bucks... That would be great. It doesn't help that all my favorite strains are the really stinky ones

HF - I really tried to make some of these diy filters work - built 3 different ones using the carbon sheets from HD & Loews but when it came to building one using activated carbon, all the local stores that carried carbon (Petco, Wallmart etc.) made it too expensive in the long run..
I was lucky that a great local source carried Carbonaire's & Active Air's & i didn't have to pay for shipping on these heavy items. I think if you got some activated carbon from one of the ebay guys for a good price, then building your own would be do-able as long as you had the cfm specs matched to your grow room & fan. I ended up just saying f-it, sold a z & bought a good (& cheap) one. Next summer i'll get some a/carbon & re-fill mine when it gives out.
I must add that odor control is high on my list of security priories (next to keeping your mouth shut) & also purchased an ozone generator as a back-up.
I did end up using my diy filter as an air cleaner in my closet for drying buds & it worked out great untill the O3 came along.

Here's a pic of 2 diy's that didn't quite handle the skunk...

and my current rig...

Even though i used the best axial fan i could find (Papst/EBM), after 6 months of 12/12 use it's starting to get louder, so i'm going to replace it with an S&P TD-100x & not worry about smell or roasting the girls when it dies. As much as i love DIY projects, i've learned to bite the bullet & go pro for piece of mind.

I've never tried to filter smells with activated carbon sheets, but as KillaBrown mentioned, I use this stuff to cover intakes. It keeps dust and bugs out and also reduces light passing in, or out of the cabs. Some good stuff to have around..my 2pence

Thanks OY...that was just what I needed to hear. Well hell since I have bought the stuff to make the core I was planning on using, I might just do the same and use that for drying purposes....:joint:

guess I need to start pricing a S&P...Thanks again for the advice...

HF,
Using the same galvanized hvac duct fixtures with the same principal as a diy carbon (pellet) filter, i built a 36" duct muffler & used poly-fill batting instead of carbon to silence the exhaust from my 6" S&P fan. Now THAT diy project saved me some money cause i had all the filter project stuff lying around. It also cut my already quiet fan/exhaust noise by at least 50%. Most of the store bought 6" x 24" mufflers were around $80+shipping, & i made mine bigger & better for about $40. Didn't take any pics of the project cause i was too busy slicing my hands to ribbons on the f-ing sheetmetal & didn't want to bleed on my new camera...

Mines a Toyo USTF120381152T (120mm x 38mm - 115 volts) It's been running virtually non-stop for 15 years. At 30dB, it's audible but, it sounds just as you'd expect a beat up old freezer to sound and instantly becomes white noise.

I seriously doubt it could handle anything but the tiniest can filters, if any at all. That's why I went with a thin sheet odor sock style. So far so good but, so far is less than a week. We'll see.

Here's my two pfennigs on the scrubbers...
It takes about $50 to build a decent scrubber that is equal to the quality of pre-fabbed bought filters. There are great tutorials here that describe in detail how to make them, and all items are easy to obtain. Including scubbing medium. There are online outlets available for good carbon prices, or you can effectively use cat litter that has carbon and/or crystals. They work, and work well, for cheap.

A $10 glorified dryer sheet, (which is about all you are getting), just simply isn't going to cut it folks. Don't kid yourself. You will get about $10 worth of good out of em.
Buy a decent filter, or build a proper one. Use the filter sheets for pre-filters ONLY.

If we get popped because of smell issues, we make the community as a whole look like stupid shits. I would hope most of us were smarter than that.

You may be right and, lord knows, were I willing to allow the garage to sound like the tarmac at JFK, I have the fan for a can filter. Hopefully, this will be enough for a 4 sq ft uni-plant grow. I'll be harvesting in 4-5 weeks. If I can get 3 weeks of service, and another 3 weeks from the remaining pads, I'll be golden.

I've made a number of scrubbers using this stuff. It works great and last about 6 months before I have to replace the carbon filter materal.
